1 Review CER handout Why is it important to have more than one piece of evidence? Why is it important to explain how your evidence supports your claim?

2 Puzzles Part 3 Your last chance! Try to beat your time from last class.

3 Chemistry is… The study of matter and energy

4 What is matter? For each of the following, decide whether or not they are matter Batteries Heat Fear Dust DNA Love Wind Atoms Sound Clouds Wisdom Fire Air Paper Grass Light

5 What is matter? Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass: the amount of matter something is made of (on earth, it is equal to an objects weight) Volume: the amount of space an object takes up The three states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.

6 How do we know that air has mass?
Your goal today will be to design an experiment that shows that air has mass. You may use anything on the cart at the front, as well as any of the materials from the glassware cabinet, the sinks, etc. If you need something else—ask! I might have it. Keep trying until you get it!

7 Wrap up… Crash Course: Matter (~4 min)
Using either your experiment (if it worked) or the experiment they showed in the video (if your experiment didn’t work), write an argument in CER format to defend the claim “air has mass”. The back has sentence starters if you are stuck!
