Whatsa Matter?

Unit 1 Investigation I ChemCatalyst Modern chemistry is defined as the study of matter. – What do you think matter is? – Name two things that are matter and two things that are not matter.

Unit 1 Investigation I The Big Question – What is matter? – Remember what was mentioned about matter in the “Tools of the Trade” section

Unit 1 Investigation I You will be able to: – Describe some properties of matter and classify things as "matter" or "not matter.“ – Compare matter to energy

Unit 1 Investigation I Activity Purpose: In order to study matter, it is important to understand what matter is and what qualities all matter possesses. In this lesson you will work to come up with a definition for matter. (cont.)

Work in groups of 3 Each group gets a list. As a group, divide the items on the list into 3 categories – Matter – Not Matter – Unsure Each person writes the results into comp. book

List 1.Toothpaste 2.Electricity 3.A star 4.Juice in a glass 5.Sound 6.The ocean 7.Fear 8.DNA 9.Peanut Butter 10. Clouds 11. Batteries 12. Saliva 13. Helium 14. Democracy 15. Car Exhaust 16. Gasoline 17. Rain 18. Paper 19. Bacteria 20. A cell 21. Love 22. wisdom 23. heat 24. Swine flu virus 25. wind 26. atoms 27. dirt

Next Each group needs to discuss and list what properties or features are required for an item to be considered matter. REMEMBER: these properties must apply to all things that are matter!

Unit 1 Investigation I MatterUnsureNot Matter (cont.)

Unit 1 Investigation I Making Sense – Pick one of the items that you consider to be “not matter”. Each member of group must pick a different item. – State why you believe that particular item is something other than matter. – Show how it doesn’t fit your definition of matter.

Unit 1 Investigation I Here are some textbook definitions of matter: – Matter is anything that has mass and volume. – Matter is anything of substance in the known universe. – Matter is anything that takes up space. Notes (cont.)

Definitions Mass The measure of the amount of stuff that makes up an item To have mass, an item must consist of stuff Volume The measure of the amount of space occupied by an item To have volume, an item must occupy space

Unit 1 Investigation I – Energy is the ability of a system to do work or supply heat to another object or the surrounding environment. – Energy is not considered to be matter because it does not take up space nor does it have mass. (cont.)

Last part of lab Go back to the provided list Determine which items consist only of energy

Are there any items that do not fall into the matter or energy groups? Come up with reasons why they do not fall into either category.

Unit 1 Investigation I Check-In Which of the following can be classified as matter according to our definition? a) a beam of sunlight b) an automobile c) an idea d) your breath e) your temper f) sadness

Is light matter? The current answer is no To be matter, an object must have mass volume To date, no one has determined that light has mass Remember that matter can exist and not be moving, not true for forms of kinetic energy

Unit 1 Investigation I Wrap-Up – Matter is everything that takes up space and has mass. – Matter exists in many forms.
