1 SLMS 7th Grade Science Energy Effects
Lesson 9 How do sound waves travel through different states of matter? SOLIDS LIQUIDS GASSES

2 Can sound travel through solids and liquids as well as gases (air)?
What do you think?

3 Lets Review States of Matter
Interactive Simulation

4 Acting? How well do you think sound will travel in these three states of matter?

5 Question? How does the state of matter affect how sound travels through that matter? Relate this to: 1. How a boat motor sounds underwater. 2. How a conversation sounds through a wall or door. 3. Have you ever seen a jet airplane before you heard it’s engine?

6 How would you investigate our question using the following materials?
- Meter Stick - Folded Aluminum Foil Stick - 1 meter Piece of String - Tuning Fork - Bucket of Water

7 Investigation REALLY! Materials: - Wooden Meter Stick
- Aluminum Foil Strips - Containers With Water - Tuning Fork - String - Other

8 Consider the Following!
Can you hear sound through all materials? Which material does the sound travel through best? (ex. The loudest sound or the sound you can hear the farthest away) SAMPLE QUESTIONS How far away can a timer’s ticking be heard when traveling through a gas and solid? Which solid conducts sound best? What is the difference in sound of clicking spoons in solids, liquids, and gases?

9 Planning Your Investigation (Journal Entry)
Draw and Label how your group will investigate sound traveling through a solid. Record Data and Describe your Findings. Draw and Label how your group will investigate sound traveling through a liquid. Draw and Label how your group will investigate sound traveling through a gas.

10 EXPLORE State the Question/Problem. State your Hypothesis?
Define: Control, Independent Variable, Dependent Variable, Constants. Record Your Data. (Chart and/or Graph) Share Your Findings - How are your findings related to the arrangement of molecules in solids, liquids and gases?

11 Wrap Up JOURNAL ENTRY CLAIM: EVIDENCE (Data): REASONING:
