Initially he served under Thomas Fairfax
An organized “standing army”

3. The men he led were often “deserters”, or would while away their hours drinking or plundering!

4. Excelled at staying close to his men under his command
His authority was based on tight military discipline
He showed real interest in his men and their welfare (wrote letter home to families of dead soldiers)
He relentlessly punished soldiers who disobeyed
Defeated Royalists at Naseby and Marston Moor (Won war)

5. Cromwell faced further challenges

6. The Rump parliament wasn’t always able to pay soldiers…

7. …and were accused of taking bribes!

8. So Cromwell headed back home…

9. And had his soldiers get rid of the “Rump”! (Pride’s Purge)

10. Cromwell’s “Roundheads” defeated the “Cavaliers”

11. In 1649 Charles is arrested and charged with treason.

12. …and put on trial
