We have extensive partnership arrangements with a wide range of local early years settings, primary and secondary schools and colleges.
This allows all students to experience learning and teaching in a wide variety of contexts
It also provides an opportunity for pupils to interact with students in a way that may widen participation
Trainee teachers research and report on school improvement priorities
We also have an extensive employer Network who provide undergraduate
Placements in a wide variety of settings

13. What are we doing ?
Creating a small core team of HMI, led by a Senior HMI, to monitor the schools and academies in a category of concern
This team meets regularly to share common issues, trends and improvements and to ensure consistency
The Regional Director and Senior HMI are meeting regularly with the DfE, the LA, MPs and sponsors
Creating a common format to record data on teaching quality/pupil progress at subject level

14. What are we doing ?
Working with teaching school alliances and other excellent local practitioners to broker a Year 6-7 transition project across the city
Involving the universities and other key stakeholders
The Regional Director sits on the Challenge Board

15. Issues for discussion:
Balance between long-term improvement and meeting the urgent imperative of moving out of Special Measures
Building an ambitious city-wide culture among a growing number of providers
What do we need to do to tackle embedded low expectations? This was a consistent feature of the recent inspections

New education landscape with diversity of providers and leadership, governance and accountability
Parental choice and growing competition between providers
New inspection regime for schools and local authorities
In this context, how does the local authority maintain ‘partnership to improve outcomes’?

Statutory requirements around sufficiency and quality assurance for all providers
Challenge and brokerage to support school improvement
Local authority as the ‘interface’ – linking providers, businesses and communities
Supporting the most vulnerable

21. It’s not just about ‘learning outcomes’!
Although they’re very important!
Schools, academies and colleges are critical partners for the local authority as the only truly universal provider
Central to delivering other priorities like economic growth, tackling unemployment and safeguarding our most vulnerable.
The best providers work closely to deliver in partnership and it all contributes to success at inspection
Quality teaching and inspiring teachers and support staff create aspirational young people - ready to be good citizens, making a positive contribution.
