WHO IS ROCKING THE BOAT ? Currents and tides

Ocean water is constantly in motion due to currents, tides and winds
Ocean water is constantly in motion due to currents, tides and winds. These movements tend to distribute heat and equalize temperatures of the water and air.

Surface currents are caused by winds and have the same basic circulation pattern as the atmosphere. Clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counterclockwise in the southern hemisphere.

Warm surface currents travel toward the poles and cold surface currents travel toward the equator.

Upwellings occur where the surface water is blown away which allows the cold nutrient rich water from below to reach the surface (fishing areas)

TIDES- are motions of the oceans caused by gravitational attraction between the earth & moon.
What about the sun ?

HIGH TIDE- is the area of the bulge

LOW TIDE- is the area between the bulges

Due to the motion of the moon and earth system tides generally occur about 1 hour later each day.

TIDAL RANGE- difference between high tide and low tide *

SPRING TIDE- when sun, moon, and earth align, high tides are at their highest and low tides are at their lowest, large tidal range (twice a month, full moon and new moon)

NEAP TIDE- minimum tides, occur when the sun, moon, and earth form a right angle. The gravitational forces are working against each other. High tides are lower and low tides are higher, low tidal range (twice a month, waxing and waning quarters)
