Module 5- Unit 2 OPERATING COMPUTER SYSTEMS
Week 8 Oct 26, 2016– J. Smith CAP
2
Objectives At the end of the lesson the student should be able to: 1. Discuss at least two capabilities and parameters of operating systems after class lecturette. 2. Outline at least two methods to assess and evaluate interoperability and compatibility with system components and vendor products after lecturette.
3
What is an Operating System (OS)?
OS is a software program that enables the computer hardware to communicate and operate with the computer software. Without a computer operating system, a computer and software programs would be useless.
4
What is an Operating System (OS)? Cont’d
When computers were first introduced, the user interacted with them using a command line interface, which required commands. Today, almost every computer is using a Graphical User Interface (GUI) operating system that is much easier to use and operate.
5
Capabilities Ease of use Available software Backwards compatibility
Support for new hardware Plug & Play Games Compatibility with MS driven websites
6
Parameters High resource requirements Closed Source Poor security
Virus susceptibility Outrageous license agreements Poor technical support Hostile treatment of legitimate users Extortionist prices Additional expenses Poor stability
7
Types of OS Windows Mac Linux Android Android
8
Windows Microsoft Windows 7 - PC and IBM compatible operating system. Microsoft Windows is the most common and used operating system.
9
Mac Apple MacOS - Apple Mac operating system. The only Apple computer operating system is MacOS.
10
Linux The Linux open source operating system, or Linux OS, is a freely distributable, cross-platform operating system based on Unix that can be installed on PCs, laptops, netbooks, mobile and tablet devices, video game consoles, servers, supercomputers and more.
