8 The Poor of England  No known welfare system for the extremely poor and hungry.  Beggars crowded the streets

9 Sir Walter Raleigh  Favored by Queen Elizabeth I. The Queen refused to let him to go off on expeditions.  He never landed in North America.  Tried three times to establish an English colony.

10 Sir Walter Raleigh  First exploration was led by Philip Amadas & Arthur Barlow  Amadas & Barlow sailed up the eastern coast to Pamlico Sound & anchored near Hatteras Island.  They named the land Virginia in honor Queen Elizabeth.

11 Meeting the Natives  Philip Amadas & Arthur Barlow met Algonquian Indians and exchanged tributes.  English settlers and Indians were not a threat to each other.  Amadas and Barlow befriended two Algonquian Indians, Manteo & Wanchese, who returned to England with them.

12 Two Points of View-The English  Europeans considered themselves superior to others.  Viewed Native Americans has savages.  Europeans had the right to rule over uncivilized people.
