Socio-medical model of health and illness: An approach to health and illness that focuses on the social and environmental factors which influence our health and well-being, including the impact of poverty, poor housing, diet and pollution. Solutions are found in improving environmental and social conditions.

Illness and disease: Like health, these terms are difficult to define. The Oxford English Dictionary defines disease as 'a condition of the body or mind'. Disease and illness (like health) can impact on our physical, social, emotional, spiritual and intellectual well-being.
