1 Ecosystems and Biomes Chapter 23 Section One

2 Energy Flow in Ecosystems
Energy Roles Producer Consumer Decomposer

3 Producers Organism that can make its own food is called a producer.
Examples: Plants, Algae, and Bacteria

4 Consumer Organisms that obtain energy by feeding on other organisms.

5 Consumers are classified in three categories!!!!
Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores Eat only plants Eat only animals Eats both plants and animals

6 Scavengers Some carnivores that feed on the bodies of dead organisms are called Scavengers.

7 Decomposers Organisms that break down wastes and dead organisms and return the raw materials to the environment.

8 Food Chains and Food Webs
The movement of energy through an ecosystem can be shown in diagrams called food chains and food webs.

9 Food Chain or Food Web

10 Energy Pyramids A diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web.

11 Energy Pyramids The most energy is available at the producer level. At each level in the pyramid, there is less available energy than at the level below.
