2 Vision A future we would like to make happen
Every workhour in the office and in the field builds the right buildings, infrastructure, and neighborhoods safely and productively Definition of Vision by Robert Burgelman, GSB, Stanford

3 Sustainable Design and Construction Program
Every workhour in the office and in the field builds the right buildings, infrastructure, and neighborhoods safely and productively

4 SUS-SUS Sustainable Urban Systems
Four SDC Tracks SDC-M Management SDC-S Structures SDC-E Energy SUS-SUS Sustainable Urban Systems How the organization is formed depends in large part on the nature of the work being performed Productivity and effectiveness depend on alignment between: The nature of work we are doing How we organize ourselves to accomplish interdependent work Structure to minimize coordination cost Processes to enforce needed coordination We must reach forward into how the work of the program is likely to be done in order to understand how best to organize during planning

7 Our Students’ Diversity – Aspirations
“Establish a highly esteemed construction company in my home country” “Design and build humane, efficient, inspiring buildings” “Create structures that interact holistically with the environment” “Be the person that makes the decisions that influence the sustainability of a building” “Establish my own construction firm to promote the popularization of new construction technologies and methods” “Go on to develop innovative water resource solutions” “Reduce costs and keep profits up through minimizing wasted materials, time, and labor” “To design and manage projects that make people enjoy going to work without having to deal with traffic” “Interests lie at the intersection of energy and resource management with the design of urban systems”

8 Construction Curriculum Overview
“WHY?” Managers of project teams must exhibit a broad range of knowledge, expertise, and comprehensive project viewpoints. All SDC curricula are based on a common core of 7 academic areas of emphasis which are weighted to provide a strong academic foundation for practice in any of the 4 tracks. “HOW?”

25 More Information…

26 Common Questions Full program available online? No, not yet
The experience of working with your peers at Stanford and building a global network is an important part of the program Can I apply with a non-engineering undergraduate degree? Yes, but you will need to complete the required prerequisites before coming to Stanford or while you are at Stanford How important is work experience? Work experience is important for graduate school It’s an important criterion for admission

27 Common Questions What is the minimum TOEFL score?
89 for internet-based TOEFL or 575 for the paper-based TOEFL for MS 100 or 600 for Ph.D. What is the minimum GRE score? What is the minimum GPA or percentile? There is no minimum GRE score or GPA or percentile, but, of course the higher the score the better We look at all aspects of the application together, i.e., your statement of purpose, GPA, GRE, recommendations, work experience and other aspects of the CV like service, and TOEFL if applicable A high score is important for consideration for financial aid

28 Common Questions What if I want to switch my track? Easy
What financial aid is available? Fellowships Research Assistantships Teaching Assistantships Highly qualified applicants can be considered for financial aid Once I am enrolled as a MS student how can I apply for a more advanced degree (Engineer, Ph.D.) Admission to a post-MS degree requires a significant research efforts, so you will need to find a research advisor Once you have an advisor and your progress and performance are satisfactory, switching to an advanced degree is easy administratively
