Teacher understands how to plan and deliver instruction in reading, writing, listening and speaking Understand how to teach reading comprehension of literature and informational texts Select appropriate strategies to increase student skills in reading and writing “Strategy teaching is a five-step process. First, introduce the strategy to your students and label it as a new learning strategy. Next, identify it with a name and explain how it is used. Then, demonstrate how to use it by applying it directly to specific content. Next, give students the time and opportunity to practice using it with that content. Finally, discuss with your students how effective they found this strategy to be for them and ask them for which other types of tasks this new strategy might be good (Serdyukov and Hill , 2009, p. 182).

Teacher understand how to teach formal and informal speaking and listening skills Teacher provides opportunities to use and evaluate skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking Supporting Details: “Cognitive strategies are those that involve any type of practice activity. These are techniques that promote deeper understanding, better retention, and/or increased ability to apply new knowledge. The techniques that fall into this category are familiar to successful learners and are used on a regular basis” (Serdyukov and Hill, 2009, p. 176).
