5 A little more about Spellings…
Spellings make up nearly one third of the writing objectives in Year 4. Children will need to make sure they learn their spellings at home. We will be assessing their ability to apply spellings in written work and unseen dictations in the weeks following their spelling test.

6 A little more about Times tables
Children are expected to know all of their times tables, including division facts, by the end of the year. Children should already have learned their 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables from Year 2 and 3. Times tables fact families will be the main way we will teach times tables in Year 4.

7 Times tables fact families
Teaching this way has 2 advantages: firstly it reduces the number of facts that children need to learn and secondly it means children will be better able to see the relationship between division and multiplication. For example, Knowing this fact family means you know: 3 x 6 = 18 6 x 3 = 18 18 ÷ 3 = 6 18 ÷ 6 = 3

8 A little more about Reading
Your child will learn key reading skills during Guided Reading sessions in class. In Year 4, our main focus is on developing inference skills and reading a wider range of text types – reading bingo. When reading at home, the focus should be more on understanding a book as opposed to just decoding words – question types handout.

9 Brass Tuition All Year 4 children will learn to play a brass instrument: cornet, trumpet, trombone or baritone. Our weekly lesson will be on a Monday. Children will need to remember their instruments every week. They will need to practise at home. There will be opportunity to perform.

10 Beaumanor Residential
Children will have the opportunity to go on an overnight residential trip to Beaumanor Hall in February. Both days and the evening are jam-packed with exciting activities. The school office will send out more details regarding cost, deposits and payment plans.
