1 Welcome to ELL Mrs. Yi

2 What is ELL? ELL is an acronym for English Language Lerners.
In years past, it has been called ESL, English as a Second Language. ELL is a program provided to students who are learning English as their non-primary language.

3 How does a student qualify for ELL?
A parent or teacher may request an assessment for English proficiency. Upon this assessment, students are either recommended or not recommended for the program. However, besides the test, we do use multiple criteria for entrance to the program.

4 Goal Depending on each child, students may be in the program for one or more years. In all cases, the purpose of the program is to bring students to a level of proficieny to be successful in the mainstream classroom. In a small group setting, students receive individualized help in vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and comprehension. All aspects of language acquisition—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—are taught and reinforced. Additionally, they also learn about American culture and customs.

5 What do students do in ELL?
Most ELL activities are engaging and supplements the content learned in their mainstream classrooms. Some examples of ELL activities include: word study, literature units, thematic units, guided reading, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and more.

6 ELL Rules Respect yourself and others. Listen to the teacher.
Raise your hand. Speak in English. Always do your best.

7 Homework Policy All students will have homework assignments everyday except on Fridays and holidays. All students are encouraged to read daily. Students are to hand in their assignments on time. If a student cannot complete an assignment, he/she is asked to bring a note from home. If a student does not complete his/her homework assignment, he/she will be asked to hand in his/her homework assignment the following day. A note will be sent home if a student continuously does not complete his/her assignments.
