1 EQ: How can groups drive
change in society? Labor Unions Emerge As big business leaders merged and consolidated forces, workers found that they needed to do the same.

3 Early Labor Organizing
1866- National Labor Union (NLU) & Colored National Labor Union (CNLU) 1868- NLU persuaded Congress to legalize 8 hour workday for government workers 1869- Noble Order of the Knights of Labor Open to all people from all industries “Equal pay for equal work” Strikes used rarely & as last resort

4 American Railway Union (ARU)
United all railroad workers Founded by Eugene V. Debs This union eventually failed but changed the way unions had worked in the past Walk outs Boycotts Strikes

5 Walk-out= walking out of your job
Boycott= refusal to buy a particular good or service Strike= employees refusing to work as a form of protest

6 Great Strike of 1877 Baltimore and Ohio Railroad workers protested 2nd wage cut in 2 months Work stoppage spread to other lines Governors asked President Rutherford B. Hayes to step in because the strike was impeding interstate trade and U.S. mail Federal troops sent in to end a strike for the first time ever

7 Haymarket Affair (1886) 3,000 gathered at Chicago’s Haymarket Square to protest police brutality Turned into a riot that gets out of control Generated negative press Public began to turn against the labor movement

8 Pullman Company Strike
Pullman produced railroad cars Panic of 1893 laid off workers cut wages Continued charging the same amount of 1894- the economy improved Pullman did not raise wages or decrease rent Workers went on strike Pullman would not negotiate & hired strikebreakers which resulted in violence President Grover Cleveland was forced to send in troops Pullman fired strikers & the railroads blacklisted others

9 American Federation of Labor (AFL)
Founded by Samuel Gompers 4 million members Focused on Collective Bargaining Negotiation between workers and management concerning wages, hours, & working conditions Also used strikes as a major tactic

10 Socialism Becomes Popular
Economic and political system based on government control of business and property and the equal distribution of wealth Communism is an extreme form of Socialism Eventually lost steam in U.S.
