1 Elements of Chemistry Chapter 17

2 Chemistry is Known as the Central Science.
Chemistry is the study of matter and the transformations it can undergo.

3 The Submicroscopic World is Super-Small
Everything around us is made of atoms. Atoms combine to form molecules.

4 Phases of Matter

5 Phases of Matter Can Change

6 Matter has Physical and Chemical Properties
Properties that describe the look or feel of a substance is a physical property. During a physical change no new substance is made.

7 Matter has Physical and Chemical Properties

8 Matter has Physical and Chemical Properties

9 Matter has Physical and Chemical Properties
A chemical property is the ability of a substance to react with other substances. During a chemical change, there is a change in the way the atoms are chemically bonded to one another.

13 The Periodic Table Helps Us to Understand the Elements

14 Periods and Groups Each horizontal row is called a period.
Each vertical column is called a group or family.

15 Groups

16 Elements Can Combine to Form Compounds
When atoms of different elements bond to one another, they make a compound. A compound is represented by its chemical formula.

17 Naming Ionic Compounds
The name of the element to the left, is followed by the name of the element to the right, with the suffix “-ide” NaCl – Sodium Chloride MgF2- Magnesium Fluoride
