Layers Layers Layers Exosphere Thermosphere Mesosphere Stratosphere Troposphere

One More Look

TROPOSPHERE This is our atmosphere and where our weather occurs This is the lowest atmospheric layer and is about seven miles (11 km) thick. Clouds and weather are found in the troposphere. The temperature decreases with altitude (height). Planes typically fly here

What is the TROPOSPHERE made of?
Nitrogen (N) is the most abundant gas in the troposphere Gas Composition in Troposphere- Nitrogen 78%, Oxygen 21% with the remaining 1% consists of argon and traces of hydrogen, ozone O3 and other constituents. Temperature and water vapor content in the troposphere decrease rapidly with altitude (height). Water vapor plays a major role in regulating air temperature because it absorbs solar energy and thermal radiation from the planet's surface.

Gas Composition In the Troposphere

One More Time! The Most Abundant Gas in the Troposphere is Nitrogen!

Stratosphere The stratosphere is found from about 7 to 30 miles (11-48 kilometers) above the Earth’s surface. The temperature increases slightly with altitude in the stratosphere. The ozone layer is found here and it absorbs most of the harmful ultraviolet radiation from the Sun.

Mesosphere The mesosphere is above the stratosphere. Here the atmosphere is very thin and the temperature is decreasing with altitude ( about –130 Fahrenheit) That is cold!

Thermosphere The thermosphere starts at about 55 kilometers. The temperature is hot; it is not measured using a thermometer. Temperatures in this region may be as high as thousands of degrees. Rocket Ships travel in the thermosphere!

The exosphere is the region beyond the thermosphere…
