1 Competencies for Healthcare Team Members

2 Focus on the Patient Three competencies in support of a patient focus are required of team members. 1. Respect the interests of patients and families, as defined by them. 2. Actively solicit and integrate the input of patients and families in the design, implementation, and evaluation of services. 3. Perform professional roles in a way that respects the different cultures of patients and families.

3 Competencies for Team Members: Team Orientation
1. Actively contribute to the formation of commonly agreed values, goals, and processes for doing the work of the team. 2. Actively contribute to building team identity and a positive social climate. 3. Acknowledge shared responsibility for the outcomes produced and hold other team members responsible for their contributions (in a respectful way). 4. Understand the characteristics of effective teams and common pitfalls for teams. 5. Understand the competencies of effective team members and one's personal strengths and vulnerabilities relative to the competencies.

4 Competencies for Team Members: Collaboration
1. Respect the other members of the team and those peripheral to the team (for example, front desk staff) 2. Value the contributions of people in the various professions and be constantly attentive to how people in other professions can contribute to the care of the patient and other team goals 3. Be able to explain one's own education, professional values, role, and responsibilities in the team 4. Understand the education, professional values, roles, and responsibilities of all of the other team members 5. Work interdependently with other team members 6. Communicate (for operational purposes) effectively with other team members 7. Refrain from domineering or demeaning behavior that inhibits communication and the effective performance of others in the team 8. Apply the principles and methods of evidence based practice

5 Competencies for Team Members: Team Management
1. Actively contribute to the selection and orientation of new members of the team 2. Actively contribute to both the operational effectiveness and social health of the team 3. Actively participate in the evaluation and improvement of the team's performance 4. Actively participate in training, team building, and process improvement activities 5. Actively contribute to the prevention and management of conflict in the team
