Session 3: Classification of ecological status in lakes and watercourses WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE WORKSHOP REFCOND PROYECT GROUP Biotic Index BMWP’ (modified Biological Monitoring Working Party) (Armitage et al., 1983; Modified por Alba-Tercedor & Sánchez-Ortega, 1988) Based in aquatic macroinvertebrates families inventory in each sampling point A points system ranging from 1 to 10 is asigned to each family on the basis of its sensitivity to water contamination or environmental disturbance The index value at each station is obtained by adding the points of each family found. A quality class is allocated to each stretch of river, depending of the final points total. This index considers 5 different water quality classes. Five different colours are asigned to the different classes for elaborating water quality maps. Very clean waters > 120 Water not polluted or notably disturbed Waters with some disturbance Polluted waters Seriously polluted waters Grossly polluted waters < 16
