2 Luke 4:14-40 The Rejection of Jesus

3 Jesus would have been well known in a small town
V They would have heard of the hometown prophet V Jesus read, commented, and was praised - A fruitful field of labor? V The show was over when the preaching started. Scriptures were “gracious” as long as they were not applied!

4 Who Were the Rejecters? John 1:11
He came to His own, and those who were His own did not receive Him

5 Who Were the Rejecters? Those nearest Him Acts 26:27-28
"King Agrippa, do you believe the Prophets? I know that you do.“ 28 Agrippa replied to Paul, "In a short time you will persuade me to become a Christian."

6 Who Were the Rejecters? Those nearest Him
Ones closest are often the most stubborn Those nearest Him

7 Who Were the Rejecters? Those nearest Him Those who knew about Him
Ones closest are often the most stubborn Those nearest Him Those who knew about Him 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.

8 Who Were the Rejecters? Those nearest Him Those who knew about Him
Ones closest are often the most stubborn Those nearest Him Those who knew about Him Those already claiming Him… Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

9 Why the Rejection? Didn’t think it applied to them

10 Revelation 3:16-17 So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. 17 `Because you say, "I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing," and you do not know that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked.

11 Why the Rejection? Didn’t think it applied to them
Thought he claimed too much

12 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; 15 and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.

13 Why the Rejection? Didn’t think it applied to them
Thought he claimed too much They had conditions

14 Why the Rejection? Didn’t think it applied to them
Thought he claimed too much They had conditions They didn’t like his teaching They liked the scriptures, they just didn’t like them plain and personal.

15 Hebrews 10:24, 25, 26 let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

16 Matthew 19:9 "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery.”

17 2 Thessalonians 3:6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from every brother who leads an unruly life and not according to the tradition which you received from us.

18 Matthew 18:15 If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother.

19 What Came of their Rejection?
Loving, respectable, attentive worshippers were filled with rage and ready to murder They could not hurt Him They hurt themselves because Jesus went elsewhere. What about YOU?
