‘Intellectual Activities’ Relevant experiences Two thirds should be on your subject

10 PERSONAL STATEMENT Writing Style-avoid cliché
Must be personal and reflective Avoid generalisations-be very specific Support what you say with examples

11 PERSONAL STATEMENT Aim for an effective opening:
‘I am currently studying…’ ‘I have a passion for…’ Instead– relate it to your personal experiences. Avoid quotations!

12 AN EFFECTIVE OPENING Living and learning in an area commonly associated with poverty and deprivation, has shaped and developed a strong desire to expand my knowledge in the subject of economics.

13 PERSONAL STATEMENT Two thirds on subject Analyse your experiences
What skills have they provided you with? How are they relevant for your intended course?

14 PERSONAL STATEMENT Standard English Accurate
Avoid overusing the first person ‘I’ Vary sentence openings Use a wide range of verbs and be careful with a thesaurus

15 FINAL ADVICE Start early. Plan in the holidays.
