Background Amatola Water (AW) is a state owned created in 1997
Authorized to render bulk water supply services to Amathole DM, Chris Hani DM, portions of Cacadu DM & Ukhahlamba DM in the Eastern Cape Manage water service assets to the value of R 250 million Production capacity of Mega liters potable water per day. 242 employees Secondary services offered to support WSA’s and WSP’s

DIRECT BENEFIT TO POOR AW produced million kiloliters of potable water in the 04/ 05 Estimated 24 % benefited rural poor directly Remaining 76% distributed internally by WSA’s ADM PIA contract – R81,9 million - 85% focus on backlog elimination R13,3 million internal capital spent on AW infrastructure upgrades – reducing unit costs of water and improving quality at WTW’s at Laing and Nahoon Dams R 23,9 million capital budget for 05/06 Continuous consumer awareness program via radio programs, school tours and National Events

INDIRECT BENEFIT TO THE POOR Transfer Management Support to Amathole and Chris Hani DM’s Strategic planning alignment with key stakeholders such as WSA’s and Province (IMP, IDP’s, WSDP’s and PGDP) Working for Water Program – Hyacinth Control Project at Laing and Wriggleswade Dams Participation in Provincial and national forums (IWSMF and SAAWU) Staff development through personal development plans

DIRECT BENEFIT TO POOR ADM PIA Contract: R81.9 million budget – R12 million focused on sanitation backlog reduction Buffalo City PIA Contract: R 9 million project to build 3200 composting toilets in Nxamkwana area ADM Support Service Proposal: Water and sanitation support proposal for Mnquma and Great Kei municipalities under negotiation Department of Education: PIA proposal under development to manage the Eastern Cape program to bring water and sanitation to schools Department of Science and Technology: Link to DoE proposal to investigate sustainable school sanitation INDIRECT BENEFIT TO POOR Secondment of staff to the ADM to assist managing their sanitation program
