2 Review… So far we have looked a couple of the earliest explorers to North America Giovanni Coboto (John Cabot) Discovered Newfoundland, it’s vast Cod resources, and it’s First Nations people Jacques Cartier First French explorer to visit & begin mapping North America One of the 1st explorers to engage in trade with First Nations Samuel de Champlain First explorer to establish permanent settlements in North America (Quebec & Port Royal)

3 A few other important explorers.

4 Martin Frobisher (British)
Attempted to find a trade route to Asia through the Arctic – Instead he found Pyrite (Fool’s Gold) Returned to N. America where he mined thousands of tonnes of Pyrite – but never found actual gold.

5 Henry Hudson (British)
Attempted to Find Northwest Passage to Asia – instead his ship got stuck in ice in Hudson Bay. His crew mutinied against him and left him to die in small boat with his sons His crew mutinied against him and left him to die in small boat with his son & 7 other crew members.

6 Rene de La Salle (French)
Travelled down Mississippi river and claimed much land for France This land later became part of the colony of New France Planned to conquer Mexico, however was killed by his crew in Texas

7 Pierre Verendrye Born in New France (one of the 1st N. American born Explorers) Went in search for the “Great Western Sea” (Pacific Ocean), building forts for the French along the way His two sons became the 1st non-indigenous people to see the Rocky Mountains.

8 Samuel Hearne British Explorer
Sought passage to Asia by river with help from First Nation guides Travelled with Dene leader Matonabbee

9 Alexander Mackenzie (British)
1st European to reach Canada’s West Coast Did so by travelling the Mackenzie River (named after him)

10 Sir John Franklin (British)
Tasked with finding a route through Canada’s Arctic to Asia His mission failed with no survivors
