1 Friday 9/2/16 Symbolism In your Writer’s Notebook, brainstorm 5 abstract qualities that make you unique. In what ways do you show them? -Think about characteristics or attributes that best describe you. -intelligent, thoughtful, friendly, etc…. -Don’t forget you must give an example of how you demonstrate the quality. -intelligent: good grades

A symbol is something concrete that stands for something abstract. For example, the conch stands for authority, and a candle represents truth. Symbols can be: *objects (glasses = insight) *object (bike = freedom) *characters (Ralph = leadership) *charcaters (Gabriel = angel/protector) *actions (hunting = violence) *actions (volunteering = responsibility) Prompt: Choose two characteristics or attributes that you have that are abstract qualities. Then create a symbol to represent these characteristics about you; this symbol may be unoriginal (already exists) or original (something that you create).Write a descriptive, thorough and clear response, with a 350 minimum word count, that includes 1. explanations and definitions of each quality, 2. how and why each are important to you, 3. how you show/demonstrate each attribute AND 4. a detailed explanation of your symbol.

3 Requirements Writing:
Part 1: A clear explanation and effective definitions of the qualities/characteristics you have chosen. (2 paragraphs) -How and why are each important/significant to you. Part 2: Describe and explain all aspects of your symbol including: (1 paragraph) -Colors, features, size, specific details, and if it is unoriginal or original in its design Visual: Create a unique symbol that represents what you have written about. Be creative! You may draw or design your symbol in any way that best fits you. *Remember the symbol can be original (something you create) or unoriginal (something that already exists that you re-design).

4 YOUR IDENTITY NARRATIVE PAGE MUST INCLUDE:
1. One 8.5x11 piece of cardstock. 2. VISUAL - Symbol 3. WRITING– Typed, minimum 350 words, and attached to the base page. ***most important part – be detailed and specific!! 4. Border – create a border for your page 5. Title – give your page an original and creative title 6. Name – your name as the author must be on the front of the page DUE DATE: Friday 9/9/16 *These will be shared in class.
