and becomes more specific, as this triangle indicates. *Thesis=CLAIM+ABSTRACT NOUN (If you are unclear on this we will continue to talk on Monday!) +Hook +Background/context +Thesis

4 Body Paragraph 1 Repeat E and A as needed! M—Main idea E—Evidence
A--Analysis T—Tie up/tie back to main idea and thesis

5 Function In an extended definition essay, the first body paragraph is the “function” paragraph. In this paragraph, you explain the function of the word or concept you are defining. Questions to explore in this paragraph: What is it? What defines it? What does it do? What does it lead to?

6 Body Paragraph 2 Repeat E and A as needed! M—Main idea E—Evidence
A--Analysis T—Tie up/tie back to main idea and thesis

7 Example In the second body paragraph in a definition essay, you will present specific examples of your word/concept in action and explain how they fit with your definition/function.

8 Body Paragraph 3 Repeat E and A as needed! M—Main idea E—Evidence
A--Analysis T—Tie up/tie back to main idea and thesis

9 Non-Example (Negation)
In a typical definition essay, the third body paragraph is often a “negation” paragraph. In this paragraph you provide a non-example or non- examples and explain why those non-examples DON’T fit into your definition. This helps define the parameters or boundaries of the word for your reader.

10 Conclusion Specific to general +Restate thesis +Review main ideas
+Leave the reader with something to think about…connection to the world, universal idea

11 Today’s To Do 1) Read the article provided. Highlight and annotate the article, looking specifically for evidence that could be used in each of your body paragraphs (function, example, non- example). You may want to use three different colored highlighters/pencils/pens for this. 2) With a partner on a separate sheet of paper, create a detailed outline for this prompt: What makes the perfect pumpkin pie? Provide its function, examples, and non-examples in your response. *Don’t forget to add unity to your piece by connecting the perfect pumpkin pie to an abstract noun in your claim and making sure that you connect that abstract noun all the way through your outline. For example, you could connect to patience, tradition, success, etc.
