3 North Dakota JSA Project Work
Thank you to all who participated Deciphering the edits Got me thinking – KISS Different learning types Go back to the people using the resource Thank the folks that participated in the project work time in ND. Explain that it was difficult to decipher the edits on the majority of the JSA’s. Ask Carla for support on this! It got me thinking that in my simple mind I would like to see something that keeps it simple in the field. PICTURES would be awesome. We all learn at different levels so lets ask the guys in the field that are using this resource. What would they like to see? This hopefully would also get their buy in quicker by including them in on the process.

4 Our Iowa Crews Have Responded!
It is about the EASE of using RESOURCES in the field Tools are best if they: Are USER FRIENDLY Are EASY to use – Flow well Have CLEAR discussion points Leave a LASTING IMPRESSION Our GOAL is to develop resources that our customers will use! We need to listen to what works best for them and develop the goods that way! Refer to ABB - Elster (Westinghouse) Metering

5 LEARNING TYPES VISUAL - SEEING LISTENING - HEARING HANDS - ON
WE ALL LEARN IN THE WAY THAT IS BEST FOR US! VISUAL - SEEING LISTENING - HEARING HANDS - ON COMBINATIONS Lead into the next few slides by explaining the different ways we all learn. Ask a show of hands who learns by which method. These can change depending on the situation and what needs to be learned or gained. educationplanner.org

6 REMEMBER THIS?? The GOAL is to GET people HOME at the end of each day! Remember this from last year? Well, we wont do this again BUT comparing football to linework – Tailgating – worked! It got the Team in the game – BUY IN! OSHA requires a tailgate to be performed in the field before the start of a job. Iowa Statewide OP procedures says it shall be documented as well (OSHA best practice). All Iowa Cooperatives have adopted this language. We all know if it isn’t documented it didn’t _______________? (happen) RIGHT? So now let me lead you into the current state of the JSA development! Which will aid in a positive productive tailgate! Hang with me through this! This sample is provided for informational purposes only and should not be relied on as legal advice. The sample cannot and does not address the unique facts and circumstances of your specific situation. 7 Which method best meets your:
Learning ability? Ability to identify with a task? SO….on the next slides show the helmets and other pictures and have them name off the Teams of the helmets etc.. Then go to the next slide and have them read the names of the teams etc. as written. Which is easier?? May be diff for diff people!! Which learning type are you? Let’s see how the following slides fit with you! The following examples are related to what the workers in the field can use to better their safety communication during a tailgate conference. Remember – Ease of using the resources in the field will aid in a lasting impression Ultimately making the workplace a safer place!

8

9 Green Bay Packers Ask the audience to think about their learning type and which slide is easier to grasp.

10

11 Minnesota Vikings After the written Mn Vikings shows, ask a Viking fan to read the next slide! Have some fun with this! Making a presentation fun, helps it to be remembered!

12 Make reference to Butler REC for having this on the water bottles they produce.

13 Water mixed with electricity equals danger

14 Have a little fun with this one! Get the audience motivated!

17 Think About… Your TEAM and what works best for them
What type of tools will they learn best from? This is about getting the “buy In” from your Team so they will use the resources made available to them. Get their input – this will help get their buy in! It is about getting us ALL home safe at the end of the day. We will have those that are resistant to change etc. We just have to work with them in the best way possible. Now, let’s relate this to the JSA’s!!

18 Here is a written JSA as we have reviewed, edited and used
Here is a written JSA as we have reviewed, edited and used. A lot of words that may or may not fit your or others learning styles. As always we start out with the General JSA which will include the 5 topics OSHA requires us to discuss. Can you name the 5 topics? Work Procedures involved Hazards associated with the job Energy source controls Special precautions Personal protective equipment

19

20 Again, a lot of words and sections to grasp/identify/learn.
Then, we get into the JSA of the job at hand. This is a JSA to change out an insulator on an A4. Again, a lot of words and sections to grasp/identify/learn. Go through the steps. There are only two pages of this actual job but, much is left to be desired. The job itself – no visual of how it could or should be done! 22 A4 Insulator Changeout Lets see how this JSA differs from the purley written JSA.

23 OSHA Required Tailgate Discussion Topics
Hazards Associate with the job Work Procedures Involved Special Precautions Energy Source Controls PPE Required The five topics required by OSHA to dicuss in the tailgate. First letter from each topic = How Well Should Everyone Plan

24 Work Procedures Involved Hazards associated with the job
Special Precautions Energy Source Controls Personal Protective Equipment Be sure to record your emergency location and post in a location everyone on the crew knows. Have your PPE and First Aid kit available Be sure your AED is accessible. A safe job begins with a thorough inspection of… Tools Be certain all of your tools are in good shape. Equipment Make sure your trucks are all in working order take time to preflight your equipment and insure there are no surprise. Line/Structure Look over the line and structure. Are there any potential hazards? (Broken insulators, damaged wire, clearances over roads or from trees?) Be aware of your work area, be sure to cover anything you can reach touch or fall into. And anything that can reach touch or fall into you! Discuss all PPE needed for the job and wear your PPE. Be sure to inspect your equipment prior to use. Identify all voltages you are exposed to. Be sure to have all of your Arc-Flash protective gear on. Identify a dedicated observer Working in traffic exposes you to hazards that are difficult to control. Give the vehicles plenty of time to see and avoid you! Follow the manual of traffic control for your area. Slips trips and falls are some of the most common injuries, look for hazards that could cause this. Be sure to inspect and wear your fall arrest harness. Here are the five topics again with signs and bubbles to jump start tailgate discussion!! Gets the crew involved. Gives the feeling of knowing it is ok to ask questions, give suggestions, see something, say something! The next slides will get directly into the task at hand. Visual, written and audio will all be used here! There are suggestions in the notes as to what to discuss. This will get the Team involved, creating communication channels to open!

25 Be sure to inspect the adjacent spans and structures for problems
Be sure to inspect the adjacent spans and structures for problems. Look for clearance hazards. Look for trees and traffic that may create a problem. Inspect the structure for additional hazards.

26 Ground your truck with the use of a hotstick
Ground your truck with the use of a hotstick. Be sure the ground wire is completely unrolled from the reel if used. If it is a spring rewind be sure the reel is locked. Remember truck grounding is done to provide a fast operation of the line protective device if the truck were to become energized. It may not prevent you from being injured if you are touching the earth and the truck at the same time. Don’t allow anyone to come into contact with your truck while you are doing this job!

27 Open the pole ground connection to the neutral.

28 Install cover-up to the neutral.

29 Cover-up the neutral jumper and dead ends.

30 Install cover-up to the guy wires
Install cover-up to the guy wires. The use of a hot tap will help keep these in position.

31 Working from the inside of the corner at arms reach
Working from the inside of the corner at arms reach. Install line cover-up to the phase wires.

32 Install a mechanical insulated jumper (MAC) Be sure to support both ends. As soon as it is connected remember the other end is energized.

33 Remove the existing jumper now that it is bypassed with the MAC.

34 Install cover-up to the suspension insulators and dead ends
Install cover-up to the suspension insulators and dead ends. Take care to insure there are no exposed tails!

35 Look to be sure the phase and insulators are well covered
Look to be sure the phase and insulators are well covered. Install cover-up on the exposed structure. Start low and work your way up to the top of the pole. Make sure you are not in contact with the phase cover-up when doing this. This is also a good time to install the sling around the top of the pole near the insulator you will be changing out. You can connect the insulating link to the sling as well.

36 Uncover the phase on the side you are changing the insulator
Uncover the phase on the side you are changing the insulator. Install the strap hoist with the handle away from the pole. Take up the strain to the insulator and remove the pin of the dead end from the insulator. Before removing the pin be sure to support the dead end shoe, conductor, and MAC to prevent it from falling.

37 Cover-up the conductor, hoist, MAC end, and the dead end shoe.

38 Check to be certain there is no exposed primary
Check to be certain there is no exposed primary. Uncover the insulator to be changed.

39 Remove the damaged insulator. Be careful of sharp edges!

40 Install the replacement insulator.

41 Cover-up the replacement insulator.

42 Uncover and re-pin the dead end shoe to the replacement insulator
Uncover and re-pin the dead end shoe to the replacement insulator. Inspect and then transfer the strain from the strap hoist back to the insulator. Remove the strap hoist, grips, and let the insulating link hang back on the pole from the sling.

43 Re cover the phase, dead end and insulator.

44 Look to insure everything on the phase is covered
Look to insure everything on the phase is covered. Move in low to uncover the pole. Make certain not to be in contact with the primary cover-up when doing this.

45 Uncover the phase insulators. Do this at arms length.

46 Re-install the primary jumper. Be careful not to drop an end.

47 Remove the MAC. Be careful not to drop an end.

48 Remove the phase cover-up

49 Move down low and remove the guy wire cover-up.

50 Remove the neutral jumper cover-up.

51 Remove the neutral cover-up.

52 Re-connect the pole ground to the system neutral.

53 Remove your truck ground with the use of a hotstick.
Admire your work!

54 Which JSA fits your learning type?
Give me your thoughts! Which JSA fits your learning type? 31 slides in the “visual” JSA compared to the written JSA of the same job with 4 pages. Which one works best for you? Your Team? Which JSA explained the job better? Got the Team involved more? You make the choice as to what works best for your Team and make it happen! Get the Team involved!

55 The Plan Move forward with the illustrated JSA’s
JSA’s for the Safety Summit IAEC will develop the JSA’s Ask the project Team to interject their thoughts as well. Further discussion will take place concerning the flash drive card and the showcase board etc. I will share this presentation (edited) during the showcase presentations at the SS. Other team members are welcome to join in on or do the presentation! Discuss more detail in business meeting
