Planning a Campus-Wide Course Materials Support System With SiteSearch Jennie McKee SiteSearch Users Group May 3, 2000

What is the CMSS? An integrated system of databases, entry forms and display pages that supports the flow of course materials information and, when possible, the materials themselves from the professors course design to the student use of the materials for the course. At the core is electronic reserves. The system expands e- reserves to include book ordering, copyright clearance, electronic syllabi and course packs.

Why Use SiteSearch? December 1996 - Invitation to submit technical based grant Start of the multi-department project idea 1997-1998 - Planning Grant and Research SiteSearch chosen July 1998 - Gateway Project

Gateway Project Goals Bring all electronic resources possible to the desktop where ever the desktop is Allow the user to focus on the content not the mechanics Focus on the users perspective

Gateway Project Components WebZ Database Access Electronic Reserves Networked CD-ROMs Locally Built Databases Videos Theses Sound Recordings Web Resources

Why Create the CMSS? Role of Reserves at the Reed College Library 14,000 + Items per Year 2/3 of Total Circulation Faculty Must Initiate 3 or 4 Contacts About Course Materials Existing Interactions Among Library, Bookstore, Faculty, Faculty Secretaries and Print Shop and Faculty Multimedia Lab

Display Pages Display as Reading List with Links Display as Syllabus with Links Cleared Copyright Clearance Requests

Other Requests How many copies does the bookstore have? Is the book available from Orbis? Can we set it up so that the students can order their textbooks online? Can we figure a way to send the book order directly into Bookstores ordering system? In to III?

Hurdles for Technical Consideration Copyright Authentication/Authorization Archiving

Copyright Written reserves policy Issues Who gets access First use = fair use Images Media - sound, video, streaming Deep linking

Authentication/Authorization Personal or Class Level Authentication Login & Password Maintenance Program written by Administrative Computing Services Possible Campus Move to Central Authentication Server

Archiving Students with an Incomplete Professor Access to Update Course Students Remembers Cool Article from Previous Course Students Needs for Transfer Credit Administration Needs to Judge Transfer Credit Official Archives

Schedule of Development First Pilot - July 2000 Second Pilot - December 2000 Third Pilot - July 2001 4th, 5th … We are not committing to a final release.

Back to the Gateway Goals At decision points remember the user focus. Integrating access to resources that support teaching and research and making them available at any networked workstation at any time will help ensure that Reed students and faculty can successfully use this wealth of information.
