The British Isles Republic of Ireland & United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, & Northern Ireland) Explain United Kingdom is made up of Wales, Scotland, England, & Northern Ireland Great Britain is the island of England, Wales, & Scotland England is just the Southeast part of the island Scotland & Wales want to be independent from England, are moving towards self-rule to a degree.

2 The Republic of Ireland’s Physical Geography
“The Emerald Isle” Hilly with an in-land plain of lush green meadows Marine west coast climate – moist! Slayhead is the most westerly point of Ireland and the second most westerly point of Europe after Portugal. I guess I don't think it's mount slayhead but the area is just referred to as Slayhead. Idk might need to look that up. But the three ridges off to the right in the photo are called the Three Sisters.

Came under control of England 1500s – Protestant Reformation – Irish stayed Catholic, English were Protestant 1840s – Potato Famine – many people fled to the US to escape starvation 1921 –Ireland gained independence from England Northern Ireland still belongs to England – terrorists are trying to win it back 1 million died of starvation and disease – were upset England didn’t help them The Gov’t has encouraged companies to move to Ireland Economy has grown! Low unemployment

5 Ireland’s Culture Language – English, but many speak Gaelic
Capital: Dublin Population: 5 million (63% live in cities) Religion – mostly Catholic (78%) Irish music & folk dancing Their birthday tradition… An odd Irish birthday tradition is to lift the birthday child upside down and give his head a few gentle bumps on the floor for good luck. The number of bumps should allegedly correspond to the child’s age plus one.

Major industrial & trading center London – major trading & financial center on the Thames River Most people work in service industries Farming – wheat & vegetables, but 1/3 of food is imported Why? Lack of farmland and short growing season, large population City of London - London's Financial District

8 The United Kingdom’s Government
Parliamentary democracy Voters elect representatives to a lawmaking body (Parliament) The party with the most reps in Parliament chooses the prime minister (like a president) Current PM: Theresa May  Constitutional monarchy Queen is the official head of state, but has little power Ruled by a king or queen for over 1,000 years!

Population: 65 million (83% live in towns) Language – English, Scottish Gaelic & Welsh (Wales) Religion – mostly Anglican & Presbyterian (Scotland) Capital: London
