2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 20071 Calculate sound insulation according to national codes and guidelines (e.g. BBR) and EN 12354 (ISO 15712) using BASTIAN ® and the built-in databases Examples given on how to verify airborne and impact sound insulation of walls and floors traffic noise insulation of facades, windows and air inlets

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 20072 Presentations 1.BASTIAN examples horisontal insulation from impact and airborne sound vertical insulation from impact and airborne sound facade insulation from traffic noise 2.Input data, how are the databases constructed ? 3.Can one rely on calculation results ? 4.Background to BASTIAN, the standard EN 12354

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 20073 Screen in BASTIAN at startup: 1.Calculate horisontal, vertical or facade insulation? Choose! 2. Room dimensions, click & type !

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 20074 First, choose how walls and floors are attached to each other (types of junction): 3. Double click and choose junction !

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 20075 Choose walls and floors from the database: 4. D-click and choose building element ! 5. Receiving room data are copied from the source room, may be changed

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 20076 Choose floorings, linings or suspended ceilings: 6. D-click and choose !

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 20077 Ready – read of the weighted results: Rw (weighted sound reduction index) L n,w or L nT,w (impact sound) Look at frequency curves of direct sound path and flanking paths, with %- contribution per path Look at all kinds of weighted values, with spectrum adaption terms listed 7. Read of results !

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 20078 Vertical sound insulation Calculate large rooms – often leading for airborne sound. Add small rooms with several heavy walls, often leading for impact sound Scrutinize designed junctions, choose appropriate models Combine different slabs, cast screeds and floorings that comply with the requirements –It may be more efficient to change the screed or slab profile or number of heavy walls than to add a floating floor, or the opposite…! Keep trying, in a few minutes you have tested a variety of constructions that comply with the requirements. Keep an eye on the main transmission paths, improve on the main sound leakages before changing the other constructions.

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 200710 Calculate sound indoors from traffic etc Choose outer wall, window, door and air inlet Choose among a variety of airborne sound sources. Type spectrum for vehicles given according to SS25267 annex D and the Nordic traffic noise calc. model NORD2005 Look at partial transmission (%) for each window, air inlet and wall, as well as outdoor and indoor sound levels. Calculations are made in third octave bands, giving an optimal choice of product. Forget about the C-terms, this handles it all and gives you the A-levels!

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 200711 Listen to the traffic sounds as being indoors yourself The computer attenuates the original sound outdoors according to the calculated sound reductions, in each third octave band, and adds room reverberation. To achieve a correct listening impression, auralization must be made at a realistic level just above the background noise of the room where the demonstration is made. Choose type of sound source Choose relevant Worksheet (wall, window etc) Choose type of listening room indoors Use A/B-test of 2 worksheets, e.g. to compare subjective effects of changing windows

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 200712 Manufacturers may now easily advertise their products in our databases, on the basis of well documented tests or theoretical investigations. How the BASTIAN- databases are constructed The databases are distributed quarterly to users in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Island, with updates and new products In cooperation with DB Akustik and SINTEF Byggforsk Sound insulation for a large number of old, generic constructions have been added with support from the Swedish research fund SBUF (project 11254)

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 200713 Step 1 – Advertisement & product data The manufacturer: 1.Choose products to advertise in the databases, optionally with support from an acoustic consultant or a laboratory 2.Determine product name designations (names, numbers etc.) 3.Send data for each product, as test protocols or theoretical investigations, showing airborne and/or impact sound insulation (-or improvements). We apply some miniumum requirements on the documentation of the sound properties of the products, cf. www.bastian.nu, /advertise.www.bastian.nu 4.Attach a picture file of the product (550x550 pxl, 256 colours) 5.Add a short information (1-2 rows) on the product, web-link to product sheets or similar for extended information to users Send all data for audit and input to the database files New database files are distributed quarterly to >100 users across all Nordic countries. We, DB Akustik and SINTEF Byggforsk coordinates the distribution of database files – one input is enough.

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 200714 Step 2 – input to the databases These data are entered: –Category/Product type –Product designation –Picture file name (.JPG) –Sound reduction data, dB –Norm. impact levels, dB –Surface weight, kg/m 2 –Coincidence freq. f c, Hz –Thickness, m Manufacturers are responsible for their data (we review them) In case errors are discovered, updates are distributed without additional costs All database versions are stored

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 200715 Step 3 – appearance in database chooser This is how the product may appear when the users opens the chooser tool: The databases have products from many countries. A filter facilitates use. Generic constructions added to facilitate calculations of old houses, from SAU (us), Nordtest, SBUF, NBI or other open publications.

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 200716 Step 4 – how calculations are made The users double click on the tables or the picture. Selectable constructions are then presented to the user BASTIAN then calculates sound insulation and sound levels with respect to spectrum of the sound source and level, construction areas, flanking transmission and the inter- action between the constructions The manufacturers do not any longer have to present expected (realistic) sound class in the building using their products, since this is always related to the inter-action with the surrounding constructions. Now, the software takes these precautions. All calculations made according to SS-EN 12354, SS 25267/-68 and the building codes

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 200717 Are the calculated results reliable? Comparisons with >100 field measurements advice: - keep at least 1 dB margin to req. in SS 25267/-68 - keep at least 3 dB marginal to older req, and 4-5 dB for light floors (depends on type of supporting structures) Use only products with well documented input data Quality of products and construction are critical – errors and defects are not accounted for in these margins Read more at www.byggamedprefab.se, section Akustikhandboken and Akustikguidenwww.byggamedprefab.se Look at our FAQ, common questions and answers at www.bastian.nu www.bastian.nu

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 200718 BASTIAN version 2.2-2.3 – more functions, easier to use implements the EN 12354 standards (parts 1-3), which have revolutionized the building acoustic planning work for consultants new models for heavy double walls, e.g. sandwich or brick walls complies with building regulations (e.g. BBR) databases contain qualified products that fulfils requirements in the building, which facilitates changes to technically equal alternatives. This encourages competition among builders, products and systems enables estimates of direct sound and flanking transmission, taking all building parts into account Weighted numbers do not tell all the truth…Use auralization – listen how it sounds in real life, inside the house! Now with network access and databases from several countries Bastian Bastian ® :

2007-08-20(copyright) Simmons akustik & utveckling ab 200719 EN-standarder in the BBR regulations Building acoustics - Estimation of acoustic performance of buildings from the performance of elements –Part 1: Airborne sound insulation between rooms –Part 2: Impact sound insulation between rooms –Part 3: Airborne sound insulation against outdoor sound Input data are laboratory values or field data of building elements, determined according to ISO standardised methods, or by theoretical investigations. We examine all input data prior to publishing. The calculation model utilizes well known statistical models, similar to heat conduction models. These models are uncertain in the individual case, particularly at low frequency. The precision is still acceptable, which is continously investigated by comparison to field measurements. Calculation results are the same weighted numbers as stated in the Swedish requirements BBR / SS 25267 /-68 (R´ w, L´ n,w, C x -terms)
