Notes and Practice Problems

3 Levels of Organization in the Environment
Atom Molecule Cell Tissue Organ Organ System Organism Population Community Ecosystem Biosphere Smallest Largest

4 Organization Vocabulary:
Organism: A single living thing (biotic factor). Population: A group of organisms from the same species. Community: All the living (biotic) factors interacting in an area. Ecosystem: All of the living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) things that interact in an area.

6 Levels of Organization in the Environment

7 Types of Organisms: Producers: Consumers: Decomposers:
Make their own food Autotrophs Consumers: Do not make their own food. Rely on another food source. Heterotrophs Decomposers: Break down dead/used materials and convert them back into nutrients.

8 Producers Consumers Decomposers

9 Consumers: Herbivore: Omnivore: Carnivore: Scavenger: eats only plants
eats plants and meat Carnivore: eats only meat Scavenger: Type of carnivore Eats only dead meat (killed by another organism)

10 Consumer Levels Primary Consumer Secondary Consumer Tertiary Consumer
Herbivores Secondary Consumer Omnivore or Carnivore Eats something that ate something else Tertiary Consumer Carnivore Eats something that ate something, that ate something else.

11 Consumer Levels

12 Food Webs vs. Food Chain Food Chain: follows a SINGLE path as animals eat each other. One path of energy vs. Food Web: shows all the feeding interconnections between organisms (plants and animals) Everything is connected

13 Food Web vs. Food Chain

14 Food Web
