1 Unit 2

2 Rules for Brainstorming
NO CRITICISM ALLOWED: People tend to automatically evaluate each suggested idea. Neither positive, nor negative comments were allowed. Write each idea down as it is given and move on. WORK FOR QUANTITY: “quantity breeds quality” – the more ideas there are, the more likely there is going to be a quality idea. HITCHHIKING WELCOME: Hitchhiking occurs when one member’s idea produces a similar idea or enhanced idea in another member. All ideas should be recorded. FREEWHEELING ENCOURAGED: Outrageous, humorous, and seemingly unimportant ideas should be recorded. It is not uncommon for the most off the wall comment to be one that leads to the solution.

3 SCAMMPERR 1. Substitute: 2. Combine: 3. Adapt: 4. Minify:
What else instead? Who else instead? Other ingredients? Other material? Other power? Other place? 2. Combine: How about a blend? An alloy? An ensemble? Combine purposes? Combine appeals?  3. Adapt: What else is like this? What other idea does this suggest? Does past offer parallel? What could I copy? 4. Minify: Order, Form, Shape, What to add? More time?

4 SCAMMPERR 5. Magnify: 6. Put to other uses: 7. Eliminate: 8. Reverse:
Greater frequency? Higher? Longer? Thicker? 6. Put to other uses: New ways to use as is? Other uses I modified? Other places to use? Other people to reach? 7. Eliminate: What to subtract? Smaller? Condensed? Miniature? Lower? Shorter? Lighter? Omit? Streamline? Understate? 8. Reverse: Interchange components? Other pattern? 9. Rearrange: Other layout? Other sequence? Transpose cause and effect? Change pace? Transpose positive and negative? How about opposites? Turn it backward? Turn it upside-down? Reverse roles?

5 SCAMMPERR Activity Get into groups of 2 You need the activity sheet

6 Fix my classroom Project
What are some problems we see in the school?

7 Fix my classroom Project
Working in groups of 2, you will brainstorm ways to invent a solution to a classroom problem You will build a prototype (working model) of your idea Name it – be creative Use google slides to present your idea Who is it for? How does it work? Positive and negative impacts

8 Ad analysis Activity Review the advertisement you have been handed
Go to my website and answer the questions in the Google form

9 Time will tell survey/bar graph activity
You are going to create a survey and ask students and teachers around the school what problems they see around You need to ask at least 10 questions What is the most annoying problem you find here at school? What problem would you like to see solved? What does not work as well as you’d like it to? If you could invent something to make your life easier at school, what would it be and why? Make sure you ask principals and Mrs. Meyers!

10 After the survey You are going to graph the results of at least one question – each member of your group needs to do a different question. Bar graph instructions: Create a title (must be related) Label your x and y axes Put a zero in the left corner Create a scale that can show your data Will be drawn on graph paper Make it look nice! Use a ruler if needed. After you create your bar graph, you will find the mean, median, mode, range
