CURRICULUM Breadth and balance Meets needs of all students
Maximise future opportunities and success Curriculum review currently taking place for Sep 2019 Our main aims are to ensure the curriculum is broad and balanced, meets the needs of all and thus ensures everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Just under half of the curriculum time is spent on the core subjects of English, science and maths. However we ensure MFL, Humanities, Technology and creative subjects have a significant focus too. The way the DfE assess school performance, there has been a significant shift towards Ebacc subjects (Eng/Ma/Sci/Hums/MFL) which has led to schools vastly reducing their offer. We continue to resist this at the current time.

Class Groupings Tutor Groups Mixed Groups Ability Groups English
Humanities Science Creative Subjects MFL Maths When we create classes our aim is to give your children the opportnity to mix with as many different students as possible. They therefore have 7 different groups in which they will work: Tutor Group 5 mixed ability groups 1 ability group in maths

KS3 ASSESSMENT Based on a student’s KS2 results in English and Maths, students are placed into 1 of 4 attainment bands Launching, Progressing, Securing, Mastering These are subject specific, i.e. a student’s band may be securing for Maths, but mastering for English For practical subjects, a student’s band is based on internal assessments during the Autumn term. NC Levels went 2 years ago as it was felt they had little meaning in how to actually provide feedback, and support students in what to do next to raise achievement…it was just a number! Therefore schools can now implement their own systems. At Teddington… Students are placed in bands based on KS2 scores. They are also further ‘fine banded’ so that within a band they are lower, middle or upper. The bands are subject specific, to recognise their strengths in some subjects over others. I.e. they may have excelled at English and thus be placed in a higher band in more literacy based subjects, but lower in maths based subjects. For practical subjects the band is based on our own internal assessments in the Autumn Term
7
KS3 ASSESSMENT Very broadly students and parents are able to use the bands to predict expected GCSE outcomes from Year 7 CAUTION – a lot can change in 5 years A student’s band is their ‘MINIMUM EXPECTED BAND’ and the aim is to consistently achieve at a level within this expected level, or to exceed it. Their Base Band will never change as this is their expected level of achievement, although they can perform at a level outside of it.

LEARNING JOURNEYS Identifies the skills required for each stage of learning for each topic/unit Differentiated by our 4 ability bands To support achievement, each subject has Learning Journeys for every topic These identify the necessary skills expected at each of our 4 bands, so students can self-evaluate and identify what they can do, and what they need to do to improve. Teachers also grade alongside the student’s own judgement
9
LEARNING JOURNEYS Will be in place for every topic for every subject
Your opportunity to support learning from home It is almost a learning checklist where students can start at the top and tick off what they can do. As they start to identify skills they haven’t yet perfected, it will indicate what band they are working at
10
You can check reports with the Learning Journeys in books
As a school we formally report student progress 3 times a year and have one subject consultation evening where you can meet teachers. Reports will look something like this Minimum Expected Band – the level at which the students should be working as a minimum in that subject, based on their primary school results. This is split into Upper, middle and lower for our 4 bands. Progress – indicates whether the student is working above, at or below their expected level. This can then be cross-referenced at home with learning journeys in their books and enable you to support home learning and the missing skills to get to the next level. You can check reports with the Learning Journeys in books

All Assessment calendars, (split by subject and Whole Year Groups), and the Learning Journeys can be found under the curriculum section of our website.

HOW CAN I HELP MY CHILD?
13
Settling in to Teddington School
Communication Organisation
14
Communication Ask how their day went
Encourage conversations with teachers / staff in school Positive communication Relationships – tutor, head of year, pastoral manager, classroom teachers Diary
15
Organisation encourage your child to have routines – books and bags kept in the same place bags packed the night before a regular time and space for doing homework no ‘multitasking’ while studying – 20 minutes focused work is better than 40 minutes of distractions Essentials every day - Diary, reading book, pencil case, scissors, glue, calculator.
16
Class work at least once a half term your child’s teacher should provide detailed feedback in books, giving targets for improvement and a task for addressing an area for development encourage your child at all times to respond (in green pen!) to their teacher’s comments. What is the teacher’s recommended next step, and how can they achieve it?
17
Attendance and punctuality
Being in school is the best way your child can make a positive transition. All students must have 96% attendance or above before there is some form of intervention. Being on time creates a positive start to the day.
