On December 27, 1956, a hunting party of five set out from Ash Point in South Harpswell, Maine to go gunning for ducks between Eagle Island and West Brown Island. The big fisherman known as Buster Estes, Jr. skippered his boat the Amy E. with son Steven, 13, son Maurice, 12, nephew Harry Jewell and fellow fisherman Everett Gatchell on board. Skiffs were on board the boat and they separated in two groups. Estes and the two young boys marooned on the ledge near West Brown Cow as the freezing tide was coming in. All three perished. Only two came home alive.

The Ledge Connections to the Author
Hall lived by the ocean Halls writings concerned people acting under pressure and his protagonists are always uncommunicative men’s men, who are skilled at their professions but unskilled at interpersonal relationships The story written in 1960 shows newer more dark realism that happened after America had time to process atrocities that had happened in the war and a sense of fear that is brought forward by artists. The influence of guns in the story is explained by his history in the military His numerous wives are reflected by the wife character in the story
