HDI considers development to be a function of 3 things:
(1.) Decent standard of living
(2.) Long and healthy life
(3.) Access to knowledge
Each country receives a total score between 0 and 1 and is grouped in one of four classes:
(1.) Very high
(2.) High
(3.) Medium
(4.) Low

No single indicator can perfectly measure the level of a country’s development. Few may be starving in a developing country with a GNI p/c of $4000; not everyone is wealthy in a developed country with a GNI p/c of $40,000. If only a few people receive much of the GNI, then the S.O.L. for the majority may be lower than the average figure implies.
