2 VOCAB Migrate To move from one place to settle in another area

3 The Aryan Culture A new group called the Aryans migrated, or moved, from their home in central Asia into India. Local Indian cultures mixed with the Aryan culture- and a new culture was created. The Aryans helped make Indian culture what it is today.

4 Cultural mixing Next, brainstorm with your group other possible effects of two cultures mixing. You can use ideas from your own experiences or other social studies subjects. How could cultural mixing be viewed as positive?  Negative?  In the case of the Aryans and Indians, do you think the effects were mostly positive or negative? Explain your response using evidence. Directions: With your group, read “A New Culture Arises” on page 110 only. Focus on the effects of the Aryan migration. Using what you learned from the textbook, list the effects from the Aryans mixing with Indian culture.

5 Effects of Aryan migration
Aryans used horse-drawn chariots to overwhelm the Indians and spread their culture. The Indians adopted parts of the Aryan language and beliefs. A new culture developed that combined traditions, ideas, and beliefs of the Indians with the Aryans. Eventually, these people learned how to make iron tools and weapons Cleared areas of forest Built farms, villages, and cities Lead to larger and more advanced civilization.

6 Cultural mixing– other possible effects
What’s positive? What’s negative? New ideas Better technology New ways of living Loss of culture (language) Wars Mixed populations New languages

7 4 corners In the case of the Aryans and Indians, the effects were mostly positive.

8 Do Now Copy the HW: Copy the definition from page 106:
Quiz on section 1 tomorrow! WHIL due tomorrow! Copy the definition from page 106: Caste In your DO NOW, respond: How can cultural interactions be positive?

9 Caste A social class of people
A caste system is a very strict type of social class system. Each caste has specific jobs and power.

10 Video 1. A person’s caste is determined by _______.
2. A person’s caste is passed down from ___________to ___________. 3. ___________ are outside the caste system altogether, and perform the lowest jobs of society.

11 Video 1. A person’s caste is determined by birth.
2. A person’s caste is passed down from generation to generation. 3. Untouchables are outside the caste system altogether, and perform the lowest jobs of society.

12 Activities With your group, read page 111 about the caste system in early India. What similarities are there between the Aryan social classes and other societies we study? What differences are there between the Aryan social classes and other societies we study? Why do you think the woman above is holding that sign? What might be some problems with this kind of system? Complete your thoughts about the “caste system” using the four corners chart.

13 Caste system classes BRAHMINS KSHATRIYAS VAISHYAS SHUDRAS
Priests and scholars KSHATRIYAS Warriors, nobles, rulers VAISHYAS Artisans, merchants SHUDRAS Farm workers, laborers, servants

14 The caste system vs. other social classes
Similarities Jobs are similar and in similar positions Gods are the most powerful Most people are farmers, laborers Differences Priests above kings “Untouchable” class Not able to move social classes

15 “Cast out caste” Why do you think the woman above is holding that sign? She does not agree with the caste system. Maybe she is stuck in a caste she does not wish to be in.  What might be some problems with this kind of system? Makes it very hard for people to move to a different caste. The lower castes cannot try to have a better life.

16 It makes sense to have a strict social class order.

17 People should stay in the same caste as their parents.

18 Dividing people up in their occupations makes sense.

19 The caste system still exists in India today, but is much less rigid
The caste system still exists in India today, but is much less rigid. This is fair.

20 The caste system in India should be completely undone.

21 The idea of an “untouchable” class is fine with me.
