1 Matter

2 9/1/16 Matter and the Periodic Table of Elements
Matter- anything that has mass and takes up space. Energy- the ability to do work or cause a change. Chemistry- the study of the properties of matter and how matter changes. Elements- a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means. ( the building blocks of matter)

3 Dmitri In 1869, created the first accepted version
Periodic Table of Elements- an arrangement of the elements in order of atomic number, in which elements with similar properties are grouped in columns. Dmitri In 1869, created the first accepted version Mendeléev- of the periodic table.

4 Rules for 1. The symbol always begins with a capital
Writing letter. Chemical 2. If there is a second letter, it is written in Symbols: lowercase. 3. Periods are not used at the end of a symbol. Period- the horizontal rows on the Periodic Table of Elements. Group- the vertical columns on the Periodic (Families)Table of Elements.

5 Mendeleev In 1869, Dmitri Mendeléev created the first accepted version of the periodic table. He grouped elements according to their atomic mass, and as he did, he found that the families had similar chemical properties.  Blank spaces were left open to add the new elements he predicted would occur.  5

Different periodic tables can include various bits of information, but usually: atomic number chemical symbol atomic mass element name 7

8 C Cu Carbon Copper Chemical Symbols
All elements have their own unique symbol. First letter is ALWAYS capitalized. If there is a second letter, it is lowercase. No periods are used in the chemical symbol. C Carbon Cu Copper 8

9 The Current Periodic Table
Mendeleev wasn’t too far off. Now the elements are put in rows by increasing ATOMIC NUMBER!! The horizontal rows are called periods and are labeled from 1 to 7. The vertical columns are called groups are labeled from 1 to 18. 9

11 Groups…Here’s Where the Periodic Table Gets Useful!!
Elements in the same group have similar chemical and physical properties!! (Mendeleev did that on purpose.) 11

13 Families Periods Columns of elements are called groups or families.
Elements in each family have similar but not identical properties. For example, lithium (Li), sodium (Na), potassium (K), and other members of family 1 are all soft, white, shiny metals. Each horizontal row of elements is called a period. The elements in a period are not alike in properties. In fact, the properties change greatly across even given row. 13

Elements with similar properties are located on the Periodic Table in the same- A column B row C energy level D period

16 Elements, compounds, and mixtures
Element- a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means. Mixture- two or more substances that are mixed together but not chemically combined.(can be separated by physical means) Compound- a substance made of two or more elements chemically combined in a set ratio. (can only be separated by another chemical reaction) 16
