Reading the Periodic Table

The Periodic Table Layout The Periodic Table is organized into rows and columns Each vertical column is called a Group or Family Each horizontal row is called a Period

Groups/Families There are 18 groups/families Elements in the same group or family have similar, but not identical characteristics (one of Mendeleevs trends) You can know properties of an element, just by knowing what group it belongs to

Periods Elements in a period are not alike in properties

Inside the Box! Each box in the periodic table shows vital information about that element The top number is the atomic number (the number of protons in that element) Remember, no 2 elements have the same number of protons

6 C Carbon 12.011

Inside the box continued…. The large letter is the elements symbol Each element has its own unique symbol How many do you know already? Below the name or symbol is the atomic mass of that element. Essentially, atomic mass is how massive the element is compared to all the other elements

Review! So what can we find out about an element simply by glancing at the periodic table? Answers How many protons it has A prediction of it’s chemical and physical properties based on which group it belongs to How massive an element is compared to other elements

How important is this for scientists What do you think?
