1 Welcome to a world full of machines!
There are machines all around us! Turn to your neighbor and discuss what kinds of machines you saw on your way to school today.

2 The 6 Simple Machines All machines are made up of some of the 6 simple machines. They are: Pulley Lever Wheel and axle Wedge Screw Inclined Plane

3 Why do we need simple machines?
The 6 simple machines make our work easier. Energy is the ability to do work Both energy and work are measured in a unit called Joules.

4 Work The amount of Work done on an object can be calculated by multiplying the Force times the Distance. Work= Force X Distance

5 Let’s review forces When a machine is used to do work, two kinds of forces are involved. The force applied to the machine is called the effort force. The force applied by the machine to act against another force like friction or gravity, is called the load or resistance force.

6 The 6 Simple Machines Inclined Plane Pulley Lever Wheel and Axle Screw
Wedge

7 The Inclined Plane An inclined plane is a flat, slanted surface.
It allows you to use less effort force to move an object. Examples: wheelchair ramps, driveways, skateboard ramps, and mountain roads.

8 Pulleys A pulley is a grooved wheel with a rope or chain wrapped around it. You use the pulley by pulling on the rope. Remember, since there is a wheel in a pulley there also has to be an axle! Examples of pulley include devices used to raise and lower rope on a flagpole.
