Presentation on theme: "Properties of Solids and Liquids"— Presentation transcript:

1 Properties of Solids and Liquids
Main Concept: The different properties of solids and liquids can be explained by differences in their structures, both at the particulate level and in their supramolecular structures.

2 Properties of Solids and Liquids
Properties of Liquids Reasons for differences in properties

3 - Solids can be: - crystalline (particles are arranged in a regular 3-D structure; ex: quartz) - amorphous (particles do not have a regular, orderly arrangement; ex: glass)

4 - In both cases, motion of individual particles is limited
- particles do not move significantly with respect to each other - Main criteria for the structure of solids: interparticle interactions and ability to pack the particles together

5 - Liquids particles are:
- very close to each other - continually moving and colliding - particles are able to move significantly with respect to each other and their arrangement - movement is influenced by the nature and strength of the intermolecular forces that are present.

6 - solid and liquid phases for a particular substance generally have relatively small differences in molar volume because constituent particles are very close to each other

7 - differences in strength of attraction between the particles and/or overall organization explain:
- For liquids, properties such as viscosity, surface tension, and volumes of mixing

8 - differences in strength of attraction between the particles and/or overall organization explain:
- For solids, hardness and macroscopic crystal structure
