1 Magazine Ideas

2 YouGov Survey - https://yougov. co
YouGov Survey Accessed 30/09/2016 Idea 1 – Photography - Look at different equipment (Cameras, lenses, filters, lights etc) - Photography projects/How To guides L How to create tilt-shift photographs, forced perspective experiments, a crash course in basic photography (cameras, lighting, framing, shutter speeds etc.) – possible feature - Video = Could go alongside part of the projects, for example, a step by step Photoshop tutorial. -Strengths- I am a photographer so I already have an arsenal of knowledge regarding this subject. I’ve also done a lot of my own photography projects and worked with a lot of equipment so I’ll easily be able to make the guides I’m thinking of, and I have plenty of experience to write about. -Weaknesses- There are already a lot of existing photography magazines so it could potentially be difficult to make something different. The YouGov survey on ‘People that enjoy Photography’ found that men aged 55 and up made up the majority. However, the percentage of men to women in this survey was 55.3% to 46.5%. This means that although there was a higher percentage of men, photography is a hobby that is enjoyed almost equally between both genders. Similarly with the age demographic, the highest percentage was 55+, but only by 39.3%. The percentile range was spread relatively evenly across each age demographic, which further proves that photography is a broader spread interest that the initial charts show. This information allows me to determine that my target audience would likely be adults in general, both male and female. -Opportunities- It would give me a chance to showcase a collection of skills that I have, as well as teach others how to use the same skills. -Threats- There are already a lot of existing photography magazines, so there is already a wide market existing for this type of magazine, so it could possibly be difficult to create something different.

Idea 2 – Fashion/Beauty - The idea of ‘alternative’ fashion, things not considered a part of the mainstream trends. (goth, punk, etc.) L includes photographs of models dressed as such L possible interviews/reviews here - Include makeup/nail things? L Work with beauticians and nail artists to create step by step tutorials L nail art, seasonal (Halloween) L the feature could be focused on a specific business place, their work, what they do, things they use, etc. Video= could go alongside the feature piece. -Strengths- I’ll be able to showcase a variety of different ideals in fashion and beauty to that of the mainstream, potentially being able to create a diverse and inclusive magazine that appeals to a more niche audience. -Weaknesses- If I choose to divert from what is considered ‘mainstream’ the magazine as a whole may just be unappealing. This is also not a topic I would usually choose to work with so I may not have as much useful knowledge that would help the creation of articles and features. -Opportunities- As this is a topic I would not usually choose to work on, it gives me the opportunity to explore some different interests and present different ideas. I would also be able to work with a client on part of this project. -Threats- A lot of this type of magazine already exist, so it would be incredibly difficult to make something that could stand out against existing competition. The YouGov survey on ‘People that enjoy Fashion’ found that the highest percentage of interest was predominantly female, aged between 25 and 39. Although this was the case, the results also showed that women over the age of 40 also enjoyed fashion, and that the youngest age group (18-24) had the least interest. Using this information I can determine that my magazine should be aimed towards older women as opposed to younger women. YouGov Survey Accessed 01/10/2016

4 Idea 3 – Creative Writing/Literature - Book reviews (modern/classic) - Features on interesting bookstores (Southbank Book Market, Baggins Book Bazaar, The Chaucer Bookshop etc.) -Possibly include something about why classics can still be relevant…bringing them into a modern day context. (Shakespeare in the 21st Century, etc.) -Strengths- As this is another topic I am very interested in I would very easily be able to write relevant articles and features. I also have a lot of pre-existing knowledge on literature and writing, which helps when writing about something that could contain historical facts. -Weaknesses- I have been unable to find any literature based magazines that are created for the purpose of leisure rather than education, which could potentially mean that is not a popular idea at all. -Opportunities- By deciding to create a feature about bookshops, I have the opportunity to go out and meet people who can help me and who may be interested in the magazine. -Threats- As no magazines of this type really exist, it could mean that there is no audience interested in this type of magazine. For this idea, I looked at two separate YouGov surveys, one on Creative Writing and another on English Literature. I found that each set of results displayed a slightly different demographic. The survey on Creative Writing presented 51.5% of males aged between 18 and 24 enjoyed this more, than the 58.9% of females aged 55 and up. From this alone I can see that bringing these two topics together may be a good idea as I would have an incredibly large audience to present it to. However, it may also be difficult as there is no specific target audience, just a large, varied group of people. 5 Justification of the final idea
Justification of the final idea From the three ideas I have presented, I feel that pursuing Idea 1 – Photography, is the best idea. This is because I already have a strong set of skills within photography and feel that I could both develop them further but also use the magazine to teach others what I know. It’s also a subject I’m incredibly passionate about so I know that I shall enjoy creating this piece. Using my pre-existing knowledge of the subject, I will easily be able to create the How To guide that would be featured to teach others some basic aspects of photography.
