1 Act 4

2 1. What is Friar Laurence’s plan for Juliet?
Friar Laurence gives Juliet a sleeping potion to take the night before her wedding to Paris. It will make her seem dead, so she will be carried to the tomb. Romeo will come get her from the tomb and they will escape together to Mantua.

3 2. What does Juliet do when she gets home from confession?
Juliet apologizes to her dad.

4 3. How does Capulet react? He is happy and moves the wedding up a day.
It was supposed to be on Thursday, but now it will be on Wednesday.

5 4. What are Juliet’s fears before taking the potion
4. What are Juliet’s fears before taking the potion? List at least four of them. Juliet worries… …maybe the potion won’t work. …maybe it’s actually poison. …maybe she’ll wake up in the tomb before Romeo gets there. …maybe there will be ghosts in the tomb. …maybe she will go insane.

6 5. In this scene, the Capulet household prepares for the wedding
5. In this scene, the Capulet household prepares for the wedding. Capulet tells the nurse to go wake Juliet. What is the dramatic irony? The audience knows Juliet will not wake yet because of the sleeping potion. Her family thinks she is dead.

7 6. After the nurse discovers Juliet’s body, how does Friar Laurence comfort the mourners?
He tells them to rejoice that she is in heaven. “Dry your tears and pin rosemary on this lovely corpse. And as is the custom, dress her in her best clothes and carry her to the church. For though our foolish human nature tells us all to grieve, reason gives up cause to rejoice that she is in heaven” ( ).
