3 Maths Number given a number, identify one more and one less
read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words. 5 Maths Multiplication and division
solve one-step problems by calculating the answer using concrete objects, pictorial representations and arrays with the support of the teacher. E.g There are 8 slices of pizza. Two children are sharing the pizza for dinner. How many slices of pizza does each child get?

6 Maths Fractions recognise, find and name a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity recognise, find and name a quarter as one of four equal parts of an object, shape or quantity.

7 English Phonics screening in Year 1
The phonics screening check contains 40 words divided into two sections of 20 words. Both sections contain a mixture of real words and pseudo-words. More information about content and access to sample materials can be found at

8 English Reading The Letters and Sounds document outlines all the phases, highlights sounds/words that must be taught at each phases and suggests ways to teach them – there are many games that you can even try at home! Children should be secure in phase 5 by the end of year 1 Please note: There will be a Phonics Training session for KS1 parents this year (date tbc)!

9 English Writing – Vocabulary, grammar and punctuation.

12 Science This term our topic is ‘Animals including Humans’. We have been learning to: identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including pets) identify, name, draw and label the basic parts of the human body and say which part of the body is associated with each sense.

13 Science Our next topic which we will be introducing very soon is ‘Changing Materials’. We will be learning to: distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made identify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, and rock describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of their simple physical properties.

14 Cornerstones This term our topic is ‘Superheroes ’ – The learning is cross curricular, involving Science, Art, Geography, History and of course English. Next term, our topic will be ‘Moon Zoom’. As with the last topic, we will be incorporating all areas of learning throughout the term.

15 General information Ghana class have PE on Thursday – please ensure they wear their PE kit’s. Forest School is on Wednesday - please ensure they wear their PE kit’s.
