1 Quarter 3 week 2 Cells

2 Monday January 30th Write out the steps of using the microscope in your notebook! Today is a QUIZ grade lab with pond water 

3 Pond water lab Making a wet mount slide
Take a full size glass slide Get a pipette and squeeze up some pond water Gently drop 1 single drop onto the slide Cover the water drop with a cover slip You are ready to view under the microscope! Complete the worksheet as you do your lab – turn in when completed!

4 January 31 & February 1: Protist coloring
Color and label the 3 types of protists Remember – protists are EUKARYOTIC cells, but are single celled organisms Try to think back to our lab, did you see any of these critters in your pond water sample? This goes in your notebook, we should finish by tomorrow! Use the textbook as a resource for labelling 

5 February 1: Protist coloring
BrainPop Protists! Put the booklet of “fun facts” in your notebook for studying! Color and label the 3 types of protists Remember – protists are EUKARYOTIC cells, but are single celled organisms Try to think back to our lab, did you see any of these critters in your pond water sample? This goes in your notebook, we should finish by today! Use the textbook & BYOD as a resource for labelling 

6 Lightning time Make sure you have finished the ScienceWorld packet and turned it in! Choose 1 type of cell and draw out a model of it, labeling key organelles Make a list of supplies THAT YOU HAVE ACCESS TO that could represent the parts of the cell Bring in materials and BUILD  Prize for the BEST MODEL – as chosen by you!

7 February 2nd Review parts of the various protists you colored.
Create a mind web as a left side “output” that shows the characteristics, along with facts you learned about them from the Brainpop Reminders: Quiz on Protists next Thursday Notebook Check #1 next Friday (Early Release too!)

8 Protist lab Question: How do protists differentiate? Hypothesis: If, then, because Materials: microscope Euglena Slide Paramecium Slide Volvox Slide Amoeba Slide Procedure: 1. Prepare the microscope based on proper procedure. 2. Under high power, record observations in the Data section. Data: 4 petri dish circles that are labelled with the organism name and total magnification

9 Protist Lab Day 2 In your Composition Notebooks we will be specifically looking, analyzing, and drawing the protists we have learned about. This is a TEST GRADE and will be done individually. We will spend today AND tomorrow completing this! Detail, detail, detail – do not rush through this!

10 Conclusion to the lab 4 paragraph format:
Restate purpose, procedure and hypothesis in paragraph format. Background information on protists along with key vocabulary used. Results, what did your observations confirm or deny for you based on your hypothesis. Therefore…what can you sum up about how protists differentiate? What errors could have occurred in the lab? How could you fix them for future? OR if the lab went smoothly, what are some keys to success you can share with scientists wanting to recreate your investigation?
