1 Bell work for When you arrive, Pick up the weekly-hand-out on my desk. It has both Bell Work (page-1) and Exit Tickets (page-2) for the whole week. Take a chemistry text book and start reading and writing the meanings of the Chapter-3 VOCABLUARY words for section 3.1 Keep this hand out with you during the lesson. You MUST turn it in to the HOMEWORK TRAY before you leave the class, today. ZERO grade if you do not. I will return your sheet back to you the following day.

2 Notices: 9/14 (FRIDAY): Chapter -2 Practice test (formative, completion grade) - Short answer Answers will be posted on our website Friday 9/14 evening, for you to self grade your test and evaluate your strengths and weaknesses. 9/21 (FRIDAY): Chapter -2 Summative test (multiple choice and short answer (25 questions) Chemistry TUTORING on 9/21 (FRIDAY) from pm

3 What is Matter?

4 What is Matter?

5 Matter - Properties & Changes
Chapter - 3 Matter - Properties & Changes Big Idea: Everything is made up of matter 3.1 Properties of matter ( ) MAIN IDEA: Most common substances have diverse chemical and physical properties and exist as solids liquids or gases. 3.2 Changes in matter MAIN IDEA: Matter can undergo chemical and physical changes 3.3 Mixtures of matter MAIN IDEA: Most everyday matter occurs as mixtures – combinations of two or more substances. 3.4 Elements & compounds MAIN IDEA : A compound is a combination of two or more substances

6 Heterogeneous Mixtures
Chapter - 3 Concept Map: Examples: Compounds Elements Chemical changes Mixtures Pure Substances Physical changes Matter Homogeneous Mixtures Heterogeneous Mixtures

7 Chapter: 3 3.1 Properties of matter
MAIN IDEA: Most common substances have diverse chemical and physical properties and exist as solids liquids or gases Substances Physical States of matter Physical properties: Extensive Intensive Chemical properties

8 1. Substances Substance: Matter that has uniform and unchanging composition Ex: gold, silver, copper, salt, pure water, charcoal, sugar, granite, 100% (ethyl) alcohol, sugar. What is NOT a substance? Ex: Air. It is a mixture of substances (mixture of different gas molecules including N2 , O2 , CO2 , H2 and even pollutants). And the types and amounts of gases in air differs from sample to sample.

9 2. States of matter Plasma Increasing ENERGY Decreasing ENERGY
Atoms far apart Plasma Increasing ENERGY Decreasing ENERGY Gas sublimation condensation deposition Evaporation Atoms packed tightly in a grid Atoms slide off melting freezing Solid Liquid

10 4 States of Matter Solid: Definite shape and definite volume, not easily compressed, extremely little motion between particles as they are closely packed Liquid: Indefinite shape (takes the shape of container) and definite volume not easily compressed, motion between particles which are free to flow Gas: Indefinite shape and volume, easily compressed, much motion between particles, which are far apart Plasma: hot ionized gas with equal numbers of positively and negatively charged atoms (Ex. Auroras, lightning sparks)

11 Northern lights are a result of charged gaseous particles (plasma) from the sun colliding with gases in the earth’s atmosphere

12 Physical Changes of Matter
Matter can transition reversibly, from one state to another without changing its composition. Such a change is a physical change. Ex: Ice (solid) melting into water (liquid) water (liquid) turning into vapor (gas) during boiling Solid Liquid Gas

13 3. Physical vs. Chemical Properties of Matter
Physical property: A quality or condition of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substances composition. Ex: Physical state (Ex: gas, liquid or solid), color, odor, electrical conductivity, melting point, boiling point Chemical property: properties that show how matter reacts with other forms of matter. Ex: Reactivity with acids, reactivity with oxygen

14 4. Physical properties of Matter
1. Extensive properties: a property that changes with the amount of matter Eg: mass, volume, density 2. Intensive properties: a property that depends on the type of matter Eg: Electrical conductivity, shininess, hardiness, melting point, boiling point, color, odor
