Types of Phrases Grade 8 Interactive Notebook

2 Absolute Phrase A phrase that combines a NOUN and a PARTICIPLE (word formed from a verb) with any accompanying MODIFIER (adds to the main noun) or object. Participle is a word formed as a verb, and used as an adjective. Example: Legs quivering, our old dog Gismo dreamed of chasing squirrels.

3 Appositive Phrase A NOUN, or a NOUN PHRASE that renames another noun right beside it. Example Her dog, a bull mastiff, looks ridiculous in a pink bow.

4 Gerund Phrase A gerund phrase will begin with a GERUND, an ‘ing’ word, and will include other MODIFIERS (adds to the main noun) and/or objects. They always function as nouns. Example: Juggling knives is not recommended.

5 Infinitive Phrase Will begin with an INFINITIVE (to + simple form of a verb). It will include objects and/or MODIFIERS (adds to the main noun) Example He plans to see the movie.

6 Noun Phrase Includes a NOUN and the MODIFIERS (adds to the main noun)
Example: This is a grammar lesson. modifies

7 Participle Phrase Will begin with a present or past PARTICIPLE (word formed by a verb) Present = end in ‘ing’ Past = end in ‘ed’ Example: Having been lied to before, I was wary.

8 Prepositional Phrase Will begin with a PREPOSITION (word that indicates location) and end with a NOUN, PRONOUN, GERUND, or CLAUSE. Example I went for a walk in the dark woods.
