1 Persuasion Is All Around You!
“Can You Hear Me Now?”

2 What is persuasion? A means of convincing people:
to buy a certain product to believe something or act in a certain way to agree with a point of view

3 Common persuasive techniques often used in advertising
Logic Facts & Statistics Bandwagon Emotional Appeal Expert Testimony False Cause and Effect Either/or Loaded Words Name Calling, Glittering Generalities, Patriotism Testimonials

4 Logic- “That makes sense!”
Using correct reasoning backed up by evidence. Using OnStar is better than having a cell phone because OnStar can call for help if you are too injured to use the phone.

5 Facts & Statistics Using numbers to support your reasons.

6 Bandwagon A statement suggesting that everyone is using a specific product, so you should too

7 Emotional Appeal A person is made to have strong feelings about a situation or product

8 Expert Testimony Experts approve this product, so you should use it “Four out of five dentists recommend sugarless gum for their patients who chew gum”

9 False Cause and Effect Falsely claiming that one event caused another to happen. Just because 2 events are related doesn’t mean one caused the other. YEAH! I got an A+ because I wore my lucky purple shirt!

10 Either/Or Falsely tells people that there are only 2 choices instead of listing all the options. Either elect me as President or don’t complain when Obama ruins the economy.

11 Loaded Words Using words with strong negative or positive connotations causing the person agree with the idea. Name Calling is a common, negative use of loaded words. Glittering Generalities is a common use of positive words to make people feel good about a product.

12 Name Calling Attacking the person instead of what they stand for or attaching a negative label to a person or thing.

13 Glittering Generalities
Using happy words so people will have positive feelings about a person or idea. Because people feel good, they don’t challenge the information.

14 Patriotism Another example of loaded words. People use the love of country to produce feelings of love, loyalty, and honor.

15 Testimonial A well-known person supports a product or service
