18 The Greatest Story ever Told
Teammates December 23, 2018 Lee Bennett

19 One Solitary Life “Here was a man who was born in an obscure village, the child of a peasant woman. He grew up in another village. He worked in a carpenter shop until He was thirty, and then for three years He was an itinerant preacher. He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never owned a home. He never had a family. He never went to college. He never put His feet inside a big city.”

20 One Solitary Life (continued)
“He never traveled two hundred miles from the place where He was born. He never did one of the things that usually accompany greatness. He had no credentials but Himself. While still a young man, the tide of popular opinion turned against Him. His friends ran away. One of them denied Him. He was turned over to His enemies. He went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed upon a cross between two thieves.”

21 One Solitary Life (contd)
“His executioners gambled for the only piece of property He had on earth while He was dying, and that was His coat. When He was dead, He was taken down from the cross and laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend. Nineteen wide centuries have come and gone and today He is the centerpiece of the human race and the leader of the column of progress.”

22 One Solitary Life (final paragraph)
“I am far within the mark when I say that all the armies that ever marched, and all the navies that were ever built, and all the parliaments that ever sat, and all the kings that ever reigned, put together have not affected the life of man upon this earth as has that one solitary life.”—Author unknown

23 Birth of Jesus-Luke 2:1-5 Now it came about in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all were proceeding to register for the census, everyone in his own city.

24 Jesus’ Birth (contd) And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, in order to register, along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. And it came about that while they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth and she gave birth to her first-born son, and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

25 Table talk Why do you think the author, Luke, spends so much time aligning Jesus’ birth to real history? (i.e.-talking about Caesar and the governor) Why do you think Mary went with Joseph? Was it necessary? Were they married?

26 Local Shepherds get a surprise concert
And in the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields, and keeping watch over their flocks by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terribly frightened.

27 Message from the angel of the Lord
And the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be for all the people, for today, in the city of David, there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths, and lying in a manger.”

28 Shepherds see the angel’s companions
And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” And it came about when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds began saying to one another…

29 What the shepherds did next
“Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.” And they came in haste and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He was lying in the manger. And when they had seen Him, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.

30 How were Mary & the shepherds affected?
But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as it had been told them.

31 Table talk Why do you think the shepherds were informed by God about the birth of Jesus? How did this encounter affect them and those whom they knew? How did this visit by the shepherds and what they said affect Mary & Joseph? Why would God send other humans to them rather than angels?

32 Wrap Up “O Come all ye Faithful”: Close with prayers around your tables, praying for yourselves, your families, our government, and others who need to put their trust in Jesus for salvation, healing, and guidance.
