Course Description: Students in 5th grade mathematics class are expected to have a good understanding of basic math skills. Grade 5 Module 1: Place Value and Decimal Fractions Grade 5 Module 2: Multi-Digit Whole Number and Decimal Fraction Operations Grade 5 Module 3: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions Grade 5 Module 4: Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Decimal Fractions Grade 5 Module 5: Addition and Multiplication with Volume and Area Grade 5 Module 6: Problem Solving with the Coordinate Plane

This course provides a highly interactive environment that will engage students in learning as well as presenting a cutting edge, technological setting and experience that will motivate the learner! The audio and visual components will provide the students with varying learning opportunities that will aid in a better understanding of topics that will prepare the student for upper level mathematics classes.

Course Goals: Prepare students for more advanced math classes
Build your confidence in and your enjoyment of mathematics Increase understanding of how important math is in solving real life problems Encourage mathematical thinking so that students feel comfortable translating real-life problems into mathematical equations and then solving the problems Improve reasoning and critical thinking skills

Cambridge Curriculum Parents are invited and expected to attend Parent-Night. In which time resources will be introduced.

Three general expectations I have for all students:
1) Think 2) Be responsible and respectful 3) Do your work Every student can learn math. It is my belief that all students have the right to learn in the best environment possible. I also believe that every person is responsible for his or her actions and will be held accountable. It is my goal to maintain a learning environment of mutual respect ,free of criticism and fear. Advice: If you work to really learn the material, your grade will take care of itself.

(EFFORT=SUCCESS) To learn and master the required content. Your grade and your performance are your responsibility.If you have questions or concerns talk to the teacher. After reading through your responsibilities and my responsibilities the class rules become real simple.

Rules and Expectations:
RESPECT is the number one rule in this classroom. Respect your materials, your instructor, and others around you. You are also responsible for your actions as well as your work. Nobody is allowed to be in the room before/without the teacher!!! Come to class prepared Attend class or you will fall very behind! Keep food and drinks OUTSIDE the classroom Teacher will dismiss the class not the bell!!! Think for yourself

Classroom Procedures:
Follow directions the first time they are given Listen quietly while others are speaking Bring all materials to class Turn in homework at the beginning of class Keep hand ,feet ,and other objects to yourself No cursing or teasing. Respectful language is to be used at all times. Follow all school rules. As you enter the classroom, you may start working on your warm –up. Only teacher assistant can answer the phone and take messages . You are to clean around your desk before you leave the room.

Homework: Homework is an extension of a lesson to be
completed outside of the classroom for reinforcement of that day’s learning and is the responsibility of the student. Homework is essential because it reinforces skills learned in class. The key to learning throughout the year in mathematics class will be working every problem each night , in preparation for the next .

I encourage each student to choose the difficult problems to complete first while they can get help from their classmates or from me. Easier problems can then be left for home. Students are encouraged to help each other in understanding the problems ,but copying homework is dishonest and not allowed.

Homework(continued) My homework policy is as follows:
All homework must be completed in pencil. Solutions must be shown. Homework is to be completed on time. Homework is to be turned in class folder at the beginning of the class. Makeup work will be taken for credit only for excused absences. Since homework completion is such a key factor for success, it is extremely important that each student complete each assignment. If you do not turn in homework (should not happen ), you are to fill out “NO HOMEWORK” paper. It will be provided by the teacher.

Materials: Please bring with you everyday:
Notebook (use only for math.) Each student MUST have a notebook which will serve as a source of information to study the content of the lessons. It must be brought to class everyday. Notebook check will be part of your classwork grade. Writing utensils (pencils, eraser, pens) Note-taking is a very important skill that we will be working on throughout the school year. Students will be expected to take notes everyday in the classroom.

Make-up Assignments: If a student will be absent or is absent it is that student’s responsibility to find out what the missing work is or will be. All make-up work should be completed before the completion of six week period, except in special cases, approved by an administrator. Students are not to ask me this during class. Students may talk to me before school, after school, before class, or after class. The student will be given one day per absent day to turn in the assignment. If the assignment is not turned in within the allotted time , the grade on the assignment will be considering missing and will turn into a zero.

Rewards: Each class will have two charts in the classroom. One of the charts will be for BEHAVIOR and the other will be for CLASSWORK. If all students complete assigned work and behave ,they will be given ,as a class , a WELL-BEHAVED sticker; and if all students turn in homework, they will be given a HAPPY FACE sticker. Based on number of stickers among other classes, at the end of six weeks ,the class that has the most stickers will get to pick one of the following: Movie or Party Night, ,Pizza Party, Field Trips.

Cheating: Cheating and plagiarism are serious offenses, and
students will be subject to the consequences in the Student Handbook! Cheating includes: borrowing, stealing, or using the work of someone else and turning it in as your own. It also includes allowing someone else to borrow or use YOUR work. If caught cheating (either turning in someone else’s work with your name on it, or letting someone look at your work) BOTH individuals will receive a 0 for the grade, and will not be allowed to make it up.

Assessment: PARTICIPATION: Participation will be based on positive contributions to classroom activities. This includes active participation, asking appropriate questions, giving answers respectfully, contributing to discussions and team work skills. Students may lose participation points if there is disruptive behavior, tardiness, inattentiveness, etc. Quizzes will be given after 2-4 sections of the chapter are covered. Unit Test: Unit tests are given at the end of every unit. Final exam: There will be a final exam at the end of every module.

Consequences: Warning Student-Teacher Conference
For a complete list of discipline cases, please refer to Student Handbook. Parent-Call Discipline Referral Depending on the situation, this order can change.

Tutoring: Tutoring will be available by appointment to an individual or small group of students. Students who are struggling may be required to receive extra tutoring throughout the year. However, I suggest all students take advantage of this FREE opportunity and utilize tutoring sessions as a tool part of the learning process.
