1 The Octet Rule

2 Element Party. http://www. youtube. com/watch
Element Party! Which elements are the most reactive? Which elements do not react at all?

3 What is so special about the Noble Gases?
Noble gases are stable because they all have a full valence shell.

4 NOBLE GAS ENVY All other elements want be like Noble Gases
All other elements want to have a full valence shell, just like the Noble Gases

5 Octet Rule Atoms will gain, lose, or share valence electrons in order to achieve a full valence shell, like a noble gas

6 How to use the Octet Rule
Nonmetals: Attract electrons (high electronegativity) Gain electrons to get a full valence shell (8 valence electrons) Become negatively charged ions (anions) Metals Do not attract electrons (low electronegativity) Lose electrons and empty the valence shell Become positively charged ions (cations)
