7 The value of integration
• same “language” (no fighting!) • more efficient communication • faster response • faster adaptation to demands • increased fuel efficiency But Volvo builds and integrates our own components. So they actually talk to each other and work with each other. They speak the same language. There’s no confusion. There’s no fighting or negotiation for control. As a result, communication is more efficient, with lightning-quick response. And this allows Volvo’s powertrain to adjust more rapidly to changing road conditions or changing driver demand ... always helping your driver stay in the sweet spot and driving at maximum efficiency.

8 Steady Progress Towards Lower Revs
Downspeeding Steady Progress Towards Lower Revs Over the decades, cruise rpm has steadily decreased from the days when trucks were set up to cruise at their maximum governed rpm. For EPA10, Volvo’s recommendation has been to cruise at 1375 rpm at 65 mph, typically with a 0.74 overdrive ratio 10 speed, or a Volvo I-Shift transmission with 3.21 ratio (0.78 overdrive) or 2.47 ratio (1.00 direct). XE package goes even farther.

11 Minimize Trailer Gap for Maximum Efficiency
/Trailer gap illustration/ Have someone from the audience measure the wheel base and then show a calculation of what the trailer gap will be. Point out trailer gap is 40” or less and overall length with a 50’ trailer is less than 75ft, and our optimal trailer gap for FE is 44”. At high speeds the trailer gap is like a vacuum sucking air into the space behind the tractor in front of the trailer creating drag, that’s why it’s ideal to keep the trailer gap short and have a trim tab with cab extenders to make the air transitions seamlessly from the tractor to the trailer. Rule of thumb for how is every 10” over a 44” trailer gap equals a 1% loss in fuel efficiency. Overall audience has learned that the VNR is 3.5% more efficient, VNL is 7.5%
